I have a GE Refride. It is not cooling as it should. It has frost on the freezer side and it is cooler than than the fridge side but neither is cold enough to freeze anything you put in it, yet it is cool enough to keep milk from ruining if you put it in the freezer side.

usually that means your fridge thermostat is being blocked by items in your fridge, telling the cooling system to shut down. If your fridge and freezer are packed, the fridge might protect itself by shutting down the cooling system. Happened to us last Thanksgiving.

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

Your defrost system is at fault.
With this brand it is most likely the defrost thermostat and defrost heater located behind the back freezer panel.
Remove the shelves and bin,then remove the freezer panel. Defrost the ice manually.
Replace the thermostat and heater assembly.

Hi: Your defrost heater ot timer is out. Hence the frost. That also clogs the airways to the fresh food compartment. If you are handy, unload the fridge (you will need a cooler or have a bbq for everybody,) I can't give you the specifics but you will need to remove the panel where the frost is, first let the frost melt off. at the bottom of the coils will be a heater tube. Usually glass with a metal coil in it. See if there is a break in the coil. If so replace it. If that is ok it is your timer. Most likely electronic and expensive. This can be anywhere. Look at a diagram of the fridge to see. Sears parts is a good site for it. Hope I helped, Jeff

Generaly the control board controls everything sometimes you have a bad thermister GE has a help line I beleive it costs 20.00 bucks but you will need a meter and know how to use it and they willl talk you thru the repair .

sounds like your defrost timer is not working properly . Most fridge/freezers the fridge gets cooled from the cool air from the freezer . But when the defrost timer is not working properly the section between the fridge and freezer freezes up and hence doesnt allow the flow of cool air into the fridge. The defrost timer can be easily replaced. 

Help me understand better. Frost build up in the freezer section on side by side? If so than you have a defrost heater problem or and, defrost themostat.

Most common problem on GE's is the defrost heater(s) has gone bad. They are a glass tube and when they go bad the tube will have a burnt or black color to it. A good heater will be clear. I bet that is your problem. Seems to be the problem about 90% of the time on GE not defrosting.
