Reverting to ttl - master flash not firing

I used my two brand new 580ex ii flashes this weekend at a wedding and had two problems. When I had them set up as one as master and the other as slave the master flash was firing but extremely weakly. In the photo you could only see the evidence of the slave flash not master flash was visible. No exposure compensation was set. When I set that flash to normal and shut the slave off it worked perfect, great exposure. Why when it was in master mode would it not fire correctly??
My second problem was one of my flashes kept reverting to ttl instead of staying on ettl. Why?? Thank you!

Hi Kate,

What camera that you are having problem with those flashes?
Will switching the two have the same problems.
Make sure it is fully pushed forward into hotshoe & locked:-)

Try shooting second current, this will save you the repair costs.

Your exposure compensation was set to zero, but was your flash compensation set at zero?

The flash ratio between a master unit mounted on my Canon 5D Mark II and slave doesn't work properly. A couple of shots are fine but then all of sudden the slave unit fires ar full power, then a few week...

If you had the ATG Gold MG8k Flash Kim X3, then your 430EX II or 580EX II can transforms into wireless radio ATG ETTL II.

If you are using the outdated wireless IR ETTL with a 580EX II as a Master. Then you have to set the Slave (ATG/580EX II/430EX II) body facing close to the Master.

Canon Speedlite 580ex ii - won't work with camera

Caroline, you should try to set the camera on "M" and the flash in 2nd curtain flash sync.

Or set flash in ATG wireless IR ETTL Slave modes and pop-up the flash on Canon EOS-70D.

Canon 550 ex speedlight - flashes okay. Won't sink with 60d (tried different cameras at dealer - same problem) Camera is okay .

Bruce,
Try these steps:
1. Set camera to manual2. Set shutter to 1/60
3. Set aperture to F5.6
4. ASA/ISO 200
5. 550EX on hotshoe
6. Do not set on slave or master
7. Turn on flash

Display must shows, ETTL.
If that doesn't work, you have to use the flash on manual.
Some of this model will not work fully on ATG Canon EOS-1D C, ATG Canon EOS-1D X IR, Canon EOS-1D X/60D/T4i because this flash is over 20 years old.

Unless you would want it to be modified by me.
But that can be costly when you can get the 580EX II for less than $425.00 USD.

Canon 580exii speedlight, I want to only use the slaves, but they won't fire when I turn off the master

You didn't say what camera model you are using.
If you have 7D/60D/T4i you can have a total of 3 wireless ir flashes.

580EX II must be set at Master, say Group A & Channel 1
Two 270EX II must be set at Slave, say Group A & Channel 1
or
One 270EX II set at Group A & Channel 1
Second 270EX II set Group A & Channel 2

Then go into camera menu & turn off Master flash & turn settings for those two flashes.

My canon 580 EX II stops firing even with new batteries

You must disable the 580EX II form using the 4AA.

4AA must be needed when using hv power pack.

Just let the 4AA use & display the LCD panel.
