Yes, you can.
Under the supply setup menu change ribbon to "NO". This shuts off your ribbon and allows you to print direct thermal with any 754 ribbon errors.

When you're sending data to the printer you're sending a command that is telling the printer you're NOT using a ribbon. When the printer receives the data it's shutting off the ribbon. Check your software.
You should be set for THERMAL TRANSFER.(RIBBON)

Press the left and right arrow keys at the same time. Printer will spit out 2 test labels. The top label tells you how many bad dots you have. Also check the checkerboard print at the bottom of labels. You will be able to see if you have any bad dots.

Yes, it does require a take up reel or core. It should look the same as the one that is in the core of the ribbon spool.
