You may need to connect it via USB to initially set it up, refer to the instruction manual.

While in use, any wireless router only needs a power supply and connection to a modem for internet access. It will not need to be wired (permanently).

Do you have to connect the router to the computer to use it

You have to be connected via either Wired or Wireless connection to use a router. You can use wireless exclusively, wired connection is not required, but often handy for troubleshooting connectivity issues. If you are using DSL or Cable modem, the modem is connected to the uplink port of the Router, then you either connect wired via port 1, 2, 3 or 4 (they are all the same) or a wireless connection (Default settings are unsecure wireless for most routers)

1. Step 1 Position your Belkin wireless G router.
Place your wireless G router in a wide open and central location. Don't connect the power plug into the router, yet. Make sure your computer is turned off.

2. Step 2 Connect all the devices.
Find the Ethernet cable that connects your PC to the modem. Unplug the Ethernet cable from your PC and insert it into the wireless G router's WAN port. You should have an additional Ethernet cable that came with your router. Take this cable and plug one end into one of the LAN ports on the router. Then connect the other end to your PC's Ethernet port.

3. Step 3 Turn on your modem, router, and PC.
Plug the power plug adapter into the modem. Turn on the modem. It'll take approximately 30 seconds for the modem to boot up. Connect the power plug adapter to the router and the other end into a power strip or outlet. Like the modem, it'll take about 30 seconds for the router to boot. Turn on your PC.

4. Step 4 Verify lights are on for your devices.
Make sure the following lights are on for your router: power, WAN, and LAN light. If you don't see any of them lit, confirm these devices are turned on. Make sure the Ethernet cable connections are installed correctly.
Step 5 Install and configure software.
Use the setup wizard application to configure your Belkin wireless G router. Set up features, such as creating your password and setting up your time zone. Continue to follow the setup wizard so you can configure ?other settings

Please follow the below steps,
(1) What type of cable you are using between your Belkin Wireless Router. If you are using a cross cable which I suspect then replace it with a straight cable. You can easily get it from Computer hardware stores and sometimes in super markets. If you do not know how to check weather a cable is straight or cross please look at the connectors of both sides of the cable from downside up. If the position of small tiny colorful wires are identical in both connectors than it is straight which we need. If the position is not identical than it is cross cable and we do not need it. It will not work properly for you.
(2) You should set the IP address to automatic in My Network/Network properties. The same for DNS.
(3) You should know the IP of the Belkin Wireless router and you should be able to ping it with the cable on.

This much configuration is required from the PC side.

(1) If you look carefully around the Belkin Wireless router you will find a pin whole. This pin whole is used to reset the settings to default by poking a pointed object like a pin. Make sure the wireless router remains powered on during this.
(2)After this if you still face connectivity problems. Try replacing with another Wireless Router just to check if the connectivity or QoS improves. If it does, you can be sure that the problem is with your Belkin wireless router.

Good Luck!

We bought a wireless router can you help me set it up where do the wires go

Hello, The wire from your cable modem plugs into the WAN (labelled "connect to modem") port on your wireless router. You then need to install the software on your PC to set up the router.
