When do I need moisture control for wood flooring?

I am installing bamboo wood flooring onto my floor. Will I need to lay moisture control first or would the glue be enough? I live in Florida

As we know that during warm and humid summers, hardwood flooring expands & during the dry winter season, it contracts. So, it's extremely important to keep up with hardwood flooring maintenance as per the specific climate. As a homeowner, you should be moisturized during winter time by the humidifier. And during the humid summer weather keep maintain it by using air conditioners or dehumidifiers. Hardwood flooring is made from domestic woods; so have the combined digital temperature/moisture meter in order to monitor indoor conditions all year round.

You wont need a moisture barrier if its a wood sub floor but if its a concrete sub floor you probably need one. you can do a simple moisture test on concrete by taking a clear plastic cup, put silicone around the rim and stick it to the floor overnight. if there is moisture droplets in the cup the next morning then you need a moisture barrier. do this in a few spots through the area wood flooring will be installed.
Good dry concrete should be white in color and no musty smell.

Does the bamboo flooring installation process differ from laminate flooring installations?

Bamboo flooring comes in three styles, solid, engineered, and click lock. The click lock and engineered are virtually designed just like laminate flooring, the only difference is the installation. Engineered has to be either nailed, stapled or glued down (depending on the subfloor, whether it is concrete or wood). The click lock is a floating floor and is installed the exact same as laminate flooring. Whether its on wood, or concrete it doesn't get nailed or glued at all.

What are the advantages of laminate flooring over hardwood flooring?

First, you can get the exact visual design that you wanted and it will cost you considerably less. Second, laminate flooring can be installed above and below the grade unlike hardwood flooring. Moreover, the laminate flooring is installed without using any nails or glue which make it much easier to it yourself. Furthermore, laminate flooring is extremely durable, easy to maintain and can be replaced easily.

I rented a bostitch MIIIFN to install bamboo hardwood flooring. The nailer is splitting the tongue of the wood. Is there some type of adjustment that I can do to stop the splitting?

you do not use nails to install bamboo floor! EVER!

bamboo flooring is installed on glue alone, and then some weight is put on the top to keep it down while glue is binding. this usually takes about 12 to 24h, depending on climate, temperature and humidity.

if these are standard board, they are 6' long and between 4" and 6" wide, depending on manufacturer. all ends indexed (tongue and grove) and pre-finished.

bamboo is a grass, but because of glue used in it's construction (formaldehyde) it makes it very hard, even harder than ironbark, in jenkins scale, bamboo floorboards are between 13 and 15 (pine is about 4.5, oak about 10 in this same scale)

bamboo expand as well with humidity, and you need to leave 10mm free space along the walls to allow for that expansion. this space is normally convered by skirting. skirting is usually about 19mm thick, therefore gap between 10mm and 15mm is ok.

if running board is longer than 13m, you need to leave expansion joint on it as well.

if you are installing directly on the concrete, do not forget about moisture barrier, if this is on already existing wood floor or cork, moisture barrier is not necessary, but you need to remove old paint from subfloor (sand it to "bare" wood) to allow better glue adhesion.

if you are installing bamboo over the bearers, then use some sort of subfloor and glue bamboo on the top of it. you cannot just stick bamboo to the bearers, bamboo is too thin (15mm) for that

NEVER NAIL BAMBOO FLOOR!

you use glue and sparringly pin-nails on bamboo skirtboard (even pin-nail tend to explode them...).

i hope that this short explanation will help you, it will be better actually if you ask some professional floor shop in your area how to do that...

if you are happy with my advice, please do not hesitate to leave your comments or vote (or both...) for me, thanx!
