The phone turns itself off. It is then very difficult to get back on.
When it does come back on it works OK but then usually turns itself off within an hour.

You mean your phone have a weak signal? There are many factors affecting the signal of your phone. It might be the phone service provider whose encountering a technical difficult on there system, there is something blocking your phone to receive strong signal like the trees,large building or maybe you are in a remote area where signal are difficult to reach. But if you mean your phone is completely cannot receive any signal then it must be its hardware antenna inside that needs to be check or replace. You need some tools to do the repair like a soldering gun,screw driver and tester to do the diagnostics. If your unsure on how to do this then you need to visit Nokia Care Center about this.
TRY REPLACING A NEW BATTERY .IF U FEEL THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH AN EXISTING BATTERY. ELSE GET THE FIRMWARE REINSTALLED USING NOKIA PC SUITE DATA CABLE AND MUST HAVE A HIGH SPEED INTERNET.
It's possible that you could fix it, but not entirely likely. It depends on whether it's just a bent antenna connector or if a circuit board is broken.

Hi ahve you tried looking under the settings the profile settings then their should be an option for handsfree device try selecting this profile and see if that makes a differance.
If not the check the contacts on bottom of phone that connects to the craddle check their clean and not coroded also check the cradle connections make sure their is nothing like a bit of paper or bent pin anything that could cause their to be loss of conection
