Scanning problem with A940 AIO Dell printer/scanner

Hi,
I recently reinstalled my operating system (Windows XP) and reinstalled the printer drivers both from the Dell website and from the CD. When I click "Scan" nothing happens. It copies and prints fine, though. I went into the control panel and opened "scanners and cameras" and clicked on that and nothing happened. Any help??? Thanks!

  • mikecant Feb 09, 2008

Exactly the same problem; it started spontaneously - and I have reinstalled the CD.

Did any of these people find a solution to the problem of not being able to get the scan function to work after pressing the "scan" button?

I have same problem now after I had to switch laptops from my Dell to a HP/Compaq. Scan works if I invoke it by clicking on the printer/scanner icon under My Computer, but it doesn't initiate the Fax Tools software that it use to when I had a Dell computer.

You installed the drivers, but did you install the actual software that came with the printer too?

Hi there, just found this solution to work perfectly. i just freaked out for a moment with the same problem. Use this or just type fax and scan in your help function. Hope this helps!

Before you begin, make sure that you've installed your scanner on the computer and that the scanner is turned on.
  1. Windows Photo Gallery.
  2. Click File, and then click Import from Camera or Scanner.
  3. In the Import Pictures and Videos window, click the scanner that you want to use, and then click Import.
  4. In the New Scan dialog box, click the Profile list, and then click Photo. The default settings for scanning a picture are automatically displayed.
  5. If you're using a scanner with a document feeder, click the Paper size list, and then click the size of the picture that you've placed on the scanner or click the size that most closely matches the picture.
  6. Click the Color format list, and then click the color format that you want the scanned file to display.
  7. Click the File type list, and then click the file type that you want to use to save the scanned file.
  8. Click the Resolution (DPI) list, and then click the resolution, in dots per inch, that you want to use.
  9. Adjust the brightness and contrast settings or type the values that you want to use.
  10. To see how the picture will appear when it is scanned, click Preview. If needed, modify the scan settings, and then preview the picture again. Repeat these steps until you're satisfied with the preview results. Some scanners might require you to place the picture in the document feeder each time that you scan.
  11. Click Scan. When the scan is complete, Windows Photo Gallery prompts you to tag the picture so that it's easier to organize or find later.
  12. In the Tag these pictures (optional) list, type a tag name, and then click Import. Windows Photo Gallery displays the picture so you can view, fix, or organize it.

Hi All,

I spent more than one hour: searched the Internet, tried changing the Drivers, checked the USB cable, restarted Printer, Computer, running Eusing Registry cleaner, checking hardware/device errors.... Eventually I went to Dell site and made the same search and within minutes it works fine!!!

SOLUTION: Just unplug the electrical connection from wall and reconnect... (6 years old solution)
You can read it here ( http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/4367315.aspx ).

Hope everyone who comes here will be happy.

Regards,
chandra

I had the same problem. I brought a new laptop and reinstalled the printer and everything worked except my scanner. After researching everywhere and trying to troubleshoot myself. I just unplugged the electrical connection. Once I replugged..what a surprise! What a simple and easy fix.. Cheers to Chandra - the thread right above mine..

My new computer, Dell Inspiron 570 will not communicate with my old printer, Dell A940, All-in-One. How do I fix?

Hi Barbra,
Check all connections.
Have you installed the printer drivers?
Try un-installing and installing the printer drivers again.
Was there change in the operating system?[Say you were using windows xp and now you're using windows vista]You may need to install the driver that corresponds with your operating system. You can download the drivers from this link:www.siliconguide.com/drivers/device/583/

Hope this helps.Thanks!

My Lexmark x6170 all-in-one Printer will not scan

I have the same printer, Windows Vista, and also only use the device drivers, but do not experience the problem you are having. The only problem I have with it is that scanning using MS Office 2007 times out before the image can completely transfer. So uninstalling your existing drivers and then reinstalling may do the trick.

If you still wish to install the All-In-One Center software, Lexmark will only provide the device drivers, as you have discovered. However, there are reports that the Lexmark X6100 series AIO (All-In-One) is identical to the Dell A960 AIO. And, fortunately, Dell is kind enough to provide the similar All-In-One Center software.

Click here for the 32-bit Windows XP version. (just in case)
Click here for the 32-bit Windows Vista version.

Give it a try and please report back as to whether or not it worked for you.

Scanning

Go into Control Panel and complete the Scanner Wizard provided by Windows XP, then try scanning pictures or documents again. If you have the disk to the printer/scanner autorun the installation again. It will just overwrite the old install, not a big deal. If you do not have the disk, look online for the "free installation disk Dell A940 Printer/Scanner" and run from this free website. Let me know how it goes.
