Frigidaire freezer quits running

I have a frigidaire upright freezer. I got it from my grandmother and plugged it in and it ran fine. The next day, it tripped the gfci plug and wouldn't come back on at all. I took the defrost timer apart and got the contacts to come apart, then put it back together and it ran fine. So I replaced the timer and it ran fine for one day and did the same thing again. Please help.

I had a similar problem. I had a refrigerator plugged into a gfci outlet for about 7 years without one problem with the gfci.
The old refrigerator was replaced with a new unit. Two days later the gfci tripped and then continued to trip after resetting. I installed a new gfci but that did not correct the problem. So, I installed a new 20 amp receptacle in place of the gfci. This has corrected the problem.

I have read one line in the manufactures manual
    "Avoid gfci receptacles"

Actionsnax please remove the freezer from the GFCI. What is happening on this old unit is that if the compressor shuts off then tries to come back on before the pressure in the system equalizes, the compressor can pull 12 amps. This is normally higher than the trip point of the GFCI. I had this happen years ago with a brand new Amana SXS refrig, in that case no one knew the unit was on a GFCI. The manufactures require that this units not be on a GFCI.
Hope this helps

Why are the sides of my upright freezer hot and the compressor very hot

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand the sides of your Frigidaire freezer are hot and the compressor is very hot. I also see that the drain plug was frozen and the coils had lots of frost, which you defrosted and your freezer began running again. It looks like your freezer quit again and started up, leaving everything hot. I suggest contacting your local authorized technician for further assistance. They will be able to diagnose and determine what exactly is causing your appliance to be hot. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Is your compressor kicking on? If not then check the contactor-relay and the capacitor. If that isn't the problem then it is probably your compressor. Which is quite expensive to replace.

Good day,
That's a no-no. Your compressor carries a 5 year warranty from the factory. However, if anything is altered on it the warranty is voided. You've got an issue with this guy.

Yes that is the correct part number.
If a new cold control does not correct the problem. Replace the compressor start relay.

Freezer Problem

If it started to cool again the compressor was running. Check the condenser and make sure it is clean. Provide as much air movement through the garage as possible . 100 degrees is a high temperature to be operating a refrigerator in.
