My vacuum cleaner is giving off a burning smell.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

this burning smell ? may be the drivebelt is spinning on the motor shaft normally caused by the roller brush and the vacuum dicts that are blocked you need to check bag is not full? then turn vac over to access the cover plate of the roller brush assy you should be able to remove this cover if you look at how it secures ? screws? when you remove cover you can then lift out the roller brush and lift off belt any restriction /blockage will be apparent now?? clear them and the brush then reassemble is reverse of above as you do not say what smell is like ie rubber? over heated motor ? the above is probably cause ? if you have any more info ? or req help then come back with info?? hope this helps ?

If its a rubber burning smell check the belt and the brushroll. if its an electrical burning smell then dont use it. the motor is overheating and will eventually get hot enough to catch fire.

I started vacuuming and the vacuum motor slowed down, then stopped. I smelled a burning smell. Then I discovered the next day that the bag bottom was wet and falling apart. Sebo X4 model

sucked up liquid goes with the air through the motor
that would cause the motor to burn out
with the current low cost of new vacuums , the repair /replacement of the motor would be close to a new unit
take it to an appliance repair shop and get a proper diagnosis and quote

How do i fix dyson DC41 Animal vacuum upright cleaner it has burning smell coming from motor and it blew the fuse box when i WENT TO VACUUM. the wire flex is a bit over twisted

You most certainly shorted this out and will need a new cord. Easy fix but you will have to take it apart and find where it failed. I doubt the motor fried but it is possible. When you take it apart look for the burn mark left by the electrical arc. That is the point you fix.

Burning smell from a vacuum usually comes from the belt....check
for any objects caught between the belt and the brush roll. Is the
surface selector at the correct setting?

I have a steam vac spinscrub carpet cleaner works good but it just started smelling like it was burning and started to smoke

Anytime someone says they smell something burning on any type of vacuum cleaner of carpet cleaner etc. All I can think of is the belt is rubbing on plastic which would cause the sense of something burning because you possibly are smelling the belt........

My vacuum cleaner is giving off a burning metal smell from the motor when it is turned on.

Hi,
Looks like ur filter is already blocked and needs to clean up! Check also the dirts going through the motor, sometimes those dirts inhibits air going and cooling the motor itself!
Hope that helps u out!

Hello can you help me please? I have a Kirby G4 vacuum cleaner, It did work ok until it started to give off burning smell and lots of sparks from the brushes. I have changed these brushes, the motor still...

Some debris, even sand or dirt, probably got into the motor, causing damage to the armature. If this is the case, you will need to replace the motor. The burning smell from the motor is generally a sure sign of a bad motor.

My Model 2961 Eureka wont take power now?

Hi,

Anytime that you smell that electrical burning smell on a vacuum cleaner, this is the motor going bad. There are two distinctive burning smells in fixing vacuum cleaners, the electrical burning smell which is the motor, and a rubber burning smell which is the belt.

The bagless vacuums cleaners in general, their motors last usually no more then 3-5 years. The motor in bagless vacuums work much harder then the motors in their bagged counterparts.

The motors in Eureka vacuums can range in price from $70-$120. If you can provide me with the exact model number on your vacuum cleaner (can be found on the bottom or the back of the machine on the sticker that also contains the serial number) I will be able to get you the part number, and price of the motor that's used in your vacuum.

It may be worth considering to just get a new vacuum cleaner at this point. If you'd like me to give you a personalized recommendation specifically for your unique cleaning needs, I'd be honored to do so. Please just let me know what types of floors you have mostly in the home and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of vacuum cleaners.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you found this helpful, please be sure to rate the repair helpful so other Fixya users that have this same problem can easily find the answer.

Thanks so much,

Chris J.

Burning smell

Hi. What does the burning smell of? Is it 'rubbery', or is it acrid and 'chemically'?! The most common item to 'burn' is the belt which drives the rotating brush at the front. Does your cleaner have a belt? This would give a burning rubber smell. The instructions should explain how to change the belt - have a close look and see if the belt has been slipping on the motor spindle. If it has, then it'll probably be worn at this point and should be replaced. A common cause of this happening is the brush bar getting caught in something - edge or rug, etc - and being forced to a standstill. If the smell is more 'acrid', it could be a problem with the motor. This is a repair service job.
