How to add a password to a wireless router

To set a password on virtually any wireless router you can do the following: First, go to "Start" and "Run." Type in "cmd" without the quotes. When the Command Prompt comes up type in the following, without quotes: "ipconfig" Locate the box that says "IP Address" and remember that number. Go to your default internet browser and type in that number. (Note: If it does not work, when typing the "IP Address" in the internet browser, type the following, without quotes: "192.168.1.1" or "10.1.1.1") If a box comes up asking for the login and password, it is probably either blank or of the following: Username: admin Password: admin or Password: admin Now go to "Advanced Setup." Click on "WEP" and select "Enable" and choose either 64 bit or 128 bit encryption. Click the box called "Passphrase" and type in what you want the password to be. Click "Save Settings." Click on "WEP" again and remember what Key 1 is. (Note: This is important.) Now you can set all users to this. cant connect to 192.168.1.1

You can reboot your router by unplugging the power and starting it back up. Then go to your pc and click on the start button and type in the run box "cmd" without the quotes. A black box (dos prompt) will open and type in the following:

"ipconfig /release" (with out the quotes)

You should then see your Ethernet adapter information showing zeros for your IP Address, subnet mask and default gateway.

Type the following:

"ipconfig /renew" (without the quotes)

You should then get an ip address from your router.

You can then open up a browser and type in the url address 192.168.1.1

You should then be prompted for a username and password.

If you know your password, type it in and you should then be aple to get into the router. If you have not changed the password then the default password is "admin". Leave the username blank.

Hope that helps!

how can I put a code on my linksys?

Open Internet Explorer.
Type 'http://192.168.0.1' (or try 'http://192.168.1.1').
This will connect to the built-in web-server inside the Linksys router.
Click to run the 'Wireless Networking Setup Wizard',
and choose an SSID and choose a password-code.

then write "ipconfig" (again, without quotes) and hit enter. read the information provided and right next to "Default Gateway" will be your router's IP address.

Password setting not going

Hello there.

You need to give the correct IP address to connect to your router through your web browser. 192.168.0.50 is most likely your Vista PC's IP address, not the D-Link router.

To find out what IP address to type into the web browser please do the following:

1) Press the "Windows" key + "R" on the keyboard, at the same time.
2) Type "cmd" without quotes in the run box and click "ok"
3) Type "ipconfig" without quotes.

Notice it says Default Gateway followed by an IP address, this is your router's IP.

Hope this helps.
