Seagate barracuda external 500 gb hard drive usb not seen any longer, cables and power okay , tried on three computers

  • ralph_zim584 Dec 31, 2009

    Hi

No it has not been, operating system is windows xp, orginally it worked then it started acting up in the form of the led blinking after it was turned on, at times it would work other times it failed, checked unit and found power supply issues; removed hard drive from external case and installed it in another case with new supply; could feel vibration from drive indicating it was runing but no computer that I hooked upto would see it; removed hard drive and hooked it up internally as a slave drive, again not seen; searching on internet indicates that seagate drives , barracuda 7200 have issues with firmware and may need upgrade but how if it can not be seen by any computer it is interfaced too

Has your drive been optimized for quick removal? If not, have you followed the "Safely Remove Hardware" procedure when disconnecting your drive? What is your operating system?

Verify what Drives have been detected by your Operating System by using Windows: Control Panel -> Admistrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management -> Your Hard disk(s) will be displayed with all existing partitions and any assigned drive letters.
Your external (or internal) drive must be recognized as having formatted partitions that have a drive letter assigned to each required partition.
Hope it helps: let me know how you go!

Info: barracuda 500 gig in a kingwin elite enclosure (sata) - usb to computer. being used as a backup and storage drive on H.P. Quadcore running windows vista. Prob: Cant be seen on any computer ive...

Quite commonly on external drives the usb interface will go bad in the external drives the hard drive enclosed is probably functioning ok. Would try a different usb cord just to make sure the cord is not the issue. If still does not work you may need to purchase a new enclosure that will have a new usb interface circuit board with it. If taken in for service they will probably tell you to purchase a new external drive.
Here is a video on recovering data a side from an external drive. Some steps are not necessary if you have access to an ide/sata to usb adapter. These are pretty inexpensive on ebay as well as replacement enclosures.

Seagate Barracuda external hardrive - damage to usb connector on

Assuming the drive itself is still ok (it sounds like it would be), then yes, you can put the drive into another case or directly into the motherboard if you know how to do that.

Seagate barracuda 500Gb USB External drive

Hi,
I have also experienced similar problem and found out that the problem is with the harddisk. It may have bad sectors which cannot be rectified. If your harddisk is older than 3 years then probablity for this this kind of problem is high. Better claim the warranty for your harddisk if its life is within 3 years as segate HDDs were given 3 years warranty.
I hope this is helpful to you

Computer does not recognize mY SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200. 11 500 GB

Try using your SEAGATE Hard Disk on another PC , if it works then you have one of these problems,
1. Your USB Port in your PC (Or Laptop) is broken and you have to get another one*
2. You have a software problem (Try reinstalling your OS or scan for viruses).
3. The USB Cable has a problem (get a new one).

(*) some technician can replace your USB port or fix it, or you can buy a "USB Hub"

If your running XP , go to control panal , Admin tools>Computer Management >Storage > Disk Management . Look for it there . If its there see if it says what file system . If none format it . If it isnt there then chack the jumper on the hard drive it self . It should be set to master or cable select .
