The channel name is frozen at the top of the screen and at the bottom the word "Mono" is also frozen, that is they both remain on the screen. I cannot get onto another channel. If I go to analogue, it is fine, but if I return to digital, the whole picture is then frozen. If I switch the set off and then back on, I return to the moving picture in digital mode but with the channel name and mono frozen again and again unable to change channel.

Hello
Press the MTS on the remote control handset to select STEREO, MONO or SAP. All the options will be available only when the current TV channel is broadcasting that option. Channels will not always carry programes, that have all MTS options. If "STEREO" appears on the screen when you select a channel means stereo sound is available with current programme. You can hear sound from both speakers. If broadcast is not strong and clear, stereo sound will not be available. Press "MTS" button to change it to "Mono". This will eliminate the noise. If "MONO" appears on the screen when you select a channel, stereo effect will not be availabe, even though you have set it to stereo. If "SAP" appears when you select a channel 'Second Audio Programe' [SAP] broadcasting is available for that programme. Press the "MTS" button to 'SAP' and you can hear that programe in different language or some other kind of audio.
Your SAP/MTS function is most likely turned on. This feature has 3 modes: Stereo, Mono and SAP. Stereo and Mono are easy to understand, it's the SAP that can get you. SAP stands for Second Audio Production. It is used to provide weather, information or an additional language translation of a program. Some broadcasters simply transmit the mono audio over the SAP audio channel when the are not using it for other purposes. Other broadcasters simply do not use it, which does not give you any audio. Look on your remote for a SAP or MTS button. If you do not see one, look in your TV user menu for this feature. If you are using a cable box, look in the audio menu of the cable box. You are looking for something set to SAP... just change it to STEREO. I hope this was helpful.
Sharp has had a few problems with their audio boards, not finding any bulletins on this model, but a few complaining about low audio on amazon reviews section. If using an antenna you will experience some channels with low audio. If using cable you should get good sound on all channels..
the 9.1 and 9.2 are digital channels and sharp does display them for at least a few seconds when you switch to that channel. Check all your setting in the audio to Stereo never SAP. To options for you are get a cable box, first check in the back and see if there is another coax in, if there are two try both rescanning after connecting.

The TV set itself will probably have a button that is marked either "Video," "Input" "Source" or "TV/VCR" - I would need to have your exact television model # to be sure. Make sure the cable box is on. Press the Video/Input/Source/TV/VCR etc button and see if your cable picture reappears on one of the source channels. If your television is connected to the cable box with a standard coaxial cable, then Ch.3 or Ch. 4 would be the right choice. If you have a digital cable box, however, the cable is probably going to be on an auxillary channel. If you give me the exact model # of your TV, and the type of wires that run from your cable box to your TV, I can give you more precise instructions. Good luck!
