Batteries appeared to die. Replaced all 3 sets of batteries (front engine, back engine, remote control). Nothing. Switched channels to both A, then both B. Train switched on. Nothing. Replaced batteries again - different make. All new batteries. Train opened new on Christmas day - worked for 3 days.
The wires will have pulled off the circuit board inside.
Remove screws (force a hex driver in there) and solder wire back on.
Train surgey (geddit) is very fiddly. Have a drink first! ;-)
I had a similar problem and it was fixed by cleaning up the button batterys and contacts to get all the grease off them, seems initially the batterys had the punch to get thu dirty contacts then not after a few seconds and train would stop. cleaned up with hot detergenty rag and was caerful not to touch with my fingers and no problem after that (so far).
Malcolm you was totally right !!!

Hi. Try pushing the middle button on top of the train, just a quick tap. It will now be able to receive signals from the remote. This must be done every time you try to control the train via the forward/backward button. Also, the remote must be pointed directly towards the train with nothing that interrupts the line of signal. /Thomas Roland
Bought it second hand and locomotive was not used for years. placed new batteries.... nothing. googled and found this site... inspected contacts of remote control which even appeared to be corroded. just scraped of the corrosion , cleaned contacts with detergent, and ... nothing. then pushed the locomotive up and down several times, and ... yes. psshh psshh. son and daddy happy!
Solution is to clean LR44 bateries with detergen and not to touch them when installing back. It's obvious that grease from the fingers not allow to contact them properly.
