Format the hard drive, one of the files on the hdd are corrupt, I had the same problem and I formatted the hard drive on my camera and the computer would read the camera again. It sucked though because I lost all my pictures in the process but that was the only way to get it to work. I had tried everything else before that.

AVI files lock the system to reboot to program interface

First make sure you have installed the newest service pack for XP
at LEAST have service pack 2 downloaded. I believe they have 4 out now.
Make sure you are not using more than ONE encoder program. I recommend downloading:
XP Codec Pack
Windows Codec Pack

These also come with AC3 Filter and MPEG decoders.

Make sure all your drivers are up to date.

Best HD Camcorder for Mac, iMovie, iMovie? 08, iMovie? 09

Recording daily life and interesting things with a HD camcorder becomes a trend for our people. They like to share these digital camcorder videos on Mac or PC with family and friends. However, selecting a good digital camcorder for Mac is not easy for green hand. Maybe more tips need paying attention, for example, the types of your camcorder and Mac, the version of iMovie on Mac, Mac and PC compability with digital camcorder and so on.

iMovie has been a Mac OS X only application bundled in the iLife suite of Macintosh applications since iMovie3. From 2007 to 2010, Apple developed iMovie to iMovie' 08, iMovie' 09, and iMovie for iPhone and iPod Touch. Luckily, iMovie' 08, iMovie' 09 are designed to work with a wide range of digital video devices and formats, including tape-based(use a FireWire cable, also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) and the latest tapeless camcorders that record to flash memory, a hard disk drive(HDD), or DVD media.

A list of Digital Camcorders Compatible with iMovie' 08, iMovie' 09 on Mac OS X
NTSC Camcorders(a video format used in North America, Central America, Japan, and parts of South America)
Canon: DC20, DC50, DC220, DC230, FS10, FS11, FS100, HF10, HF11, HF100, HG10, HG20, HG21, HR10.
JVC: GZ-HD10, GZ-HD30, GZ-HD40, GZ-MG330, GZ-MG67, GZ-MG255, GZ-MG555U, GZ-MG505U.
Panasonic: HDC-DX1, HDC-SD5, HDC-SD9, HDC-SD20, HDC-SD200, HDC-HS9, HDC-HS20, HDC-HS100, HDC-HS200, HDC-HS300, HDC-SX5, SDR-H50, SDR-H60, SDR-H200, SDR-S10
Sony: HDR-CX11, HDR-CX12, HDR-SR1, HDR-SR7, HDR-SR11, HDR-TG1, DCR-SR82, DCR-SR200, DCR-DVD308, DCR-DVD508, DCR-DVD403.
PAL Camcorders(a video format used in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, most of Asia, and parts of South America)
Canon: DC50E, DC220E, DC330E, FS10E, FS100E, HF11E, HF100E, HG10E, HG20E, HG21E.
JVC: GZ-HD10KR, GZ-HD30, GZ-HD40, GZ-MG255, GZ-MG67, GZ-MG155, GZ-MG330.
Panasonic: HDC-DX1, HDC-SD9, HDC-SD200, HDC-TM20, HDC-TM300, HDC-HS20, HDC-HS200, HDC-HS300, SDR-H79, SDR-H60, SDR-S15, SDR-S26.
Sony: DCR-DVD908E, HDR-CX11E, HDR-CX12, HDR-SR1E, DCR-SR5E, HDR-SR12E, HDR-TG1E, HDR-CX7E, HDR-UX20E, DCR-SR82E, DCR-SR100E, DCR-SR300E.

Although iMovie' 08, iMovie' 09 on Mac OS work with most of HD digital camcorders using MPEG-2 (standard definition), MPEG-4, AVCHD, and H.264 formats, not all tapeless camcorders are compatible with iMovie' 08, iMovie '09 because of the wide range of media types and the different ways manufacturers store video on these media types.

How to fix it? To meet people editing AVCHD, MOD files with iMovie, enjoying HD camcorder video on Mac, a powerful HD Video Converter for Mac is specially designed for people who need to convert AVCHD MTS/M2TS, MOD, TS, TOD, MKV files to iMovie MP4, MOV, DV for better editing.
