Tip & How-To about Video Game Consoles & Games
Not all PS3 consoles have the capability to play PS2 games. Sony have removed PS2 compatibility altogether from the new PS3 slim and the later version PS3s only have limited capability to play PS One games.
This Tip is written to help you determine if your console is backward compatible for PS2 games.
First locate the model number of your PlayStation 3 system by finding the bar code sticker at the back of the console. Underneath the bar code you will see the 11-digit serial number followed by the model number which begins with "CECH".
Models that have PS2 game compatibility are first generation consoles and the versions are 80GB, 60GB and 20GB. These PS2 compatible consoles will all have 4 USB ports which is another useful identifier.
See below for a breakdown of the model numbers that are compatible with running PS2 games;
1) Model No: CECHE01 - These are 80 GB models with 4 USB ports. (Please note 80GB models with 2 USB ports are not compatible).
2) Model No: CECHA01 60 GB models
3) Model No: CECHB01 20 GB models
Another important factor here is the PS2 games themselves.
Even if you have one of these consoles, a PS2 game may run fine on one version say the 60GB but may not work on the 80GB.
If you have identified that you have one of these consoles and want to check if a particular game is compatible with it use the link below. You can enter the exact console you are using - then enter the PS2 game you want to play;
