Surround Sound from PS3

We have had our PS3 Set up with new HD TV via our Marantz Amp.
We have used a Digital Optical Audio Cable from the PS3 to the Amp but when playing games or a BlueRay DVD we are not getting surround sound.
Do we have to select any settings on the PS3 so that it works?

The Amp is fairly old. It does automatically select transmissions when on TV. So to confirm.. will it be the settings on the AMP that will need to do manually, and not on the PS3 settings?

NO 5.1 FROM TV TO AMP.

XBOX IS CONNECTED TO THE TV VIA HMDI.

AMP READS DIGITAL BUT NOT IN AC 3.

Are you getting any sound?

If your marantz amp is part of a home cinema system then depending how old it is will depend on if it will do it automatically.I have just bought a sony surround system and it detects the signal range ie it knows it is being transmitted in 5:1 surround. If you have an old system you may have to do this manually, this should not be diffecult there should be a sound setting.

It would be worth checking the ps3 under the settings menu to make it matches what you have set up.Does your system have surround sound if it does then i would say it is a case of setting it manually.

Have you seen the user guide?

The TV is intended to be an end point of the video, not a source of audio. Many TV's (monitors) don't have ANY audio, much less surround sound capability. Composite Video is theminimalist video connection for setup; Component video to the TV should suffice for viewing DVD's.

Is your TV the SOURCE of surround sound programming (via an antenna) or does the programming come from elsewhere like a Cable Box? THAT would be the source you need to tap for surround sound.

I bought a Sharp Aquos HDTV. Am trying to use a digital co-ax cable to run tv thru my reciever. I get no sound. there is only 1 place on each device to hook up this cable. Any suggestions?

I dont wish to assume that when you say receiver, you mean sattelite or cable. Since you may be trying to hook this up to a surround sound reciever...

Let me also clarify, if this is the case, the receiver needs to be turned on AND the selection signal device set to TV or AUX wherever it is you've connected the TV.

Now by receiver, if you actually meant cable or sat box, then the Ext antena from that service connects to that units ANT IN.

Then from there on that unit ANT OUT to your TV SIGNAL IN.

If you want the external surround sound and have the connectors for this. Then you need to send them OUT to the Stereo/Surround receiver TV IN.

Now having said that and assuming that your TV does not have the Red and White Audio RCA connectors... Your Sat or Cable box does... You connect those to the surround sound Receiver Audio IN

Hopefully you'll find this useful.

If this has not answered the situation. Please feel free to come back and provide all components your working with. Surround reciever, Sat, cable, DVD, VCR whatever etc. etc... I'd be more than glad to help you through this

Good Luck

PS3 to Bose Lifestyle 28

hey, this is how i have mine set up.

Bose to PS3 via Digital Audio Optical
PS3 to TV via HDMI

This way you can get Full 5.1 surround sound, and good picture quality, also, go to the bose menu and set the optical source to your PS3.

PS3 surround sound

You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound

I just finished setting up my system last night and was facing similar problems with sound/video from my PS3. The only option I could get working was to have the HDMI cable connected from the PS3 to the TV and then connect the Optical cable to the receiver for sound. I was under the impression that HDMI handles sound and video but for whatever reason the PS3 does not agree.

I have DTS sound and fantastic picture now through my PS3, hope this helps.

Cant get the wiring figured out.........

TV is HD correct? Use the Y/CB/CR from the Sat to the TV. Use the Digital optical cable for sound from the sat to the receiver. Use the s-video from the dvd player to the tv and the l/r to the receiver for sound. I would suggest upgrading to another set of Y/CB/CR cables to connect your dvd to the TV and benefit from better picture. Also, buy another optical cable for dvd sound (so you can enjoy surround sound). Your receiver has two optical inputs so youre covered there.

Hooking up a sony playstation 3 with digital optical cable

Here's one solution, if you have an audio output from your tv, you can go from the audio output on your tv to the audio input on your receiver that way anything that is playing on your tv for example, playstation 3, dvd player etc. Anything playing on your tv will have audio on your onkyo home theater system. The other thing I would try if you want to hook ps3 directly to receiver is go to your connection settings on your ps3 menu and change your connection method to digital optical cable.

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound

Connect the PS3 to your TV with the hdmi cable and to the surround sound system with a digital optical cable, then set your PS3 to output sound through the optical port (through the sound options menu) and you're good to go!
