I have turned it off ( set for few mins.) and turned it back on and still have the same message ? Is there another fix for this error ? I appreciate your help and support in this matter : Thank You ! I HAD the same problem...a couple of posts up/down, someone suggest to re-align the film roll on the Drum. This worked for me. There are two wheels on the outer-side of the film reel (the film reel is one of two reels on the main top drum). Take out the drum, not the green reel, but the other one. Check both ends and you can se/feel two little silver metal wheels (again, at the ends). Roll the film around with your fingers until it is aligned evenly with the wheels. The metal on the wheels should not be showing at all, they should both be covered by the film reel. Replace the drum and cross your fingers. This worked for me...I'm sure a NEW drum would fix the problem, as well.
Worked for me, thanks. I rolled film and pulled it to cover any exposed metal of the silver roller on each end.
Great, it work for me too and I have a brand new drum cartridge. FYI 3/21/2017 removed the drum (cartridge with the blue handle that slides in by opening the top of the 3100cn printer) sliding it out to gain access to remove the screws on the cartridge. Do exactly what Moffia3 wrote.

Thanks for all the comments: The very first one was the best. I did the same. I opened the front panel and lifted the lid. I found the blue tab on the right side and removed the drum I found the black rubber band which is hard to miss since it's the width of the drum. I noticed will turning the wheels that operate it that there was a silver plate embedded in the rubber and realized the rubber was not centered which causes improper reading of the silver plate. I pulled on the rubber to center it replaced everything and presto!! it worked.
Thanks for this. Refer tohttp://en.community.dell.com/support-for... and get photos of what you're trying to do. Makes it a lot easier.

Glennro was spot on. The toner transfer belt in that drum assembly was just slightly shifted to the left. Removed drum cover (6 screws- don't take off the side-back ones!!), and worked the belt back to center.
Error message 004-321 was gone on re-start.
If you remove the 2 screws at the side-back AFTER you've removed the cover you can take off the two little wheels. Then you can just lift out the shaft & bearings, this will give you lots of slack on the belt and make it easy to work it over.
This is not the first time this has happened to me on this printer. Over time the belt works itself to the left (in my case). I'm not sure if this will help but I placed a tiny shim (small piece of paper) under the left bearing. Hopefully this evens out the alignment of the belt so that it does not move over anymore.

Solution #3 posted on Sep 19, 2008 gave the right answer. I was getting ready to buy a new printer.
THANK YOU APPRENTICE.
The problem is defective Drum Cartridges. If you ordered your Drum Cartridge at the time of your printer purchase it is from the first production run. Although at this time you may have a hard time getting Dell to replace them you should contact Dell with your original order number and ask for a replacement. I just did this minutes before typing this response. Here is the page from the Dell Community Support Forum. Click Here
I took the top off of the printer right above the toner cartridge and it worked again.
I have a Dell 3000cn laser color printer and the quality turned from good to average to unacceptable over the years. The colors of the photos were grossly not aligned and covered with spots and lines.
Although it had done less than 10.000 copies and not the 30.000 ones Dell announces, I ordered a new drum cartridge and before I got it I changed the empty black cartridge for a non-Dell one due to price difference.
When I started the printer I got the 004-321 error message and the printer would not work at all.
I swapped the cartridges, cleaned the printer, checked for broken or displaced parts but I got nowhere : always that cursed 004-321 message.
Then I received the new drum cartridge, put it in and the printer worked again !
So don't despair. I think that Dell does not like stow-away cartridges. Maybe it stalled the printer somehow and the drum change by-passed the error somehow.
Should be change drum kit and toners then will working fine
I don't see anyone suggesting solutions, jus the same problems over and over

Hi everybody, I have the same problem with a printer 3100cn, the display say 004-321 error, and can`t print while error is in the display turn it off and turn on again and error still apear, I need help please.
I too have encountered the same problem. I was printing #10 envelopes and this error message came up 004-321. Hope there is a non-complex solution.
Thanks
There is a reflector on the drum belt. The belt has probably moved to the side. I have been able to move the belt back to the middle and it will then work. My belt continues to move to the side, I have not yet managed to make it stay in the middle. Dell 3100cn Laser Printer. M4064 P4866 Drum Verion 01.
Hello I fixed this problem by pulling out the assembly above the toners and putting it back in. To do this, I opened the front cover, then i opened the top cover, then i flipped the blue lever on the right hand side, then grabbed the blue handle in the middle and pulled up and the assembly comes out. then i put the assembly back in, flipped the lever back down, closed the top cover and then the front cover.
The panel is reading restart printer which when i do, keeps repeating the same message. It is also saying to contact support as well as the drum need to be reseated?...........HELP!

Check this thread out:http://www.delltechsupportnumbers.com/bl...
There are a few pages in this thread that specifically address this error.
To highlight, the 004-321 error is caused by the IBT Home position sensor failing to detect the metallic foil attached to the IBT belt.
