I am having exactly the same problem. I called the Singer helpline and was on hold for 28 minutes before I gave up. I emailed them instead. Did you ever figure out what was going on?
Years ago, my second Singer [760] foot control "went", out of warranty. Singer weren't very good with parts for older models, and the sewing machine guy had to find another foot control and I had to do a lot of rewiring.
Anyway, if you go Online and look for your local Singer stockist, the part number should be there.
