Fantastic! I was just having the same problem when I read this article and pressed FN+NumLk(F11), then the keys started to work properly again.

The reason this is happening is that the connection from the keyboard to the motherboard has moved. This is a common problem. I don't recommend you attempt to fix this unless you have a degree of experience; but it's a cheap repair, and no new parts are needed.

If you REALLY want to try to fix it yourself, here's a rough guide:

The bezel above the keyboard must come off by removing the screws at the back of the machine, flipping the display all the way open (in line with the base), and GENTLY prying the bezel off. Next, the retaining screws holding the keyboard down must be removed. there's a flat cable running from the bottom of the keyboard to a clip on the motherboard; this must be removed and reseated (warning! this is a tricky operation on Acer laptops).

How do you get to type the @ function on the keyboard, when there are 4 functions that you can get from that key - I keep getting a 2 when I want to type my email address on my new laptop.

Just hold <Shift> and then press the <2> key at the upper-right of the keyboard. Do the same with <!>, <#>, <$>, <%>, <^>, <&>, <*>, <(>, <)>, <_>, <+>.
