Washer fills and spins but does not agitate

Roper Model RAG5144AWO
The washer fills and spins but does not agitate. When sitting empty the top half of the agitator feels loose and rocks a little bit. It will spin freely by hand in one direction. When in the wash cycle with NO clothes it will agitate. When you add just 3 or 4 pieces of clothing the agitator sort of goes, tick, tick, tick, move and inch, tick, tick, tick, barely move an inch, tick, tick, tick. Would this be hard to fix?

Sigh - was hoping it was something like a motor coupling. Like I said it agitates just fine with water and no clothes. I did forget to mention that once you put 3 or 4 things in it and it tries to agitate with the tick tick movement it then makes a grinding noise. I don't think changing a transmission is something I could do. So I have a washer that can only wash one pair of socks at a time huh - sigh. Thank you very very much, you have been most helpful!

Im sorry to say, it sounds like the transmission in the washer may have gone out, the unit it self sits at the bottem of the main agitator shaft under the the tub, you may be able to have this replaced, but shop around for the right price.

Motor Coupling If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor coupling might have failed. The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. It is designed to fail if the washer is overloaded in order to protect both the motor and
Drive Belt If the washer won't spin or agitate, check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't spin or agitate properly.

Drive Motor If the washer won't spin or agitate the drive motor might be defective. This is not common. Check all of the other related parts to this symptom before replacing the motor. If the motor is visibly burned out or physically damaged, replace it.

Stator Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the stator assembly might be burned out. The stator is essentially one half of a motor, it interacts with the tub by creating a strong electro-magnet. If the stator burns out the washer won't spin or agitate. Check the stator for continuity. This part is often misdiagnosed.

Door or Lid Latch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

I have a Roper Washer Model RTW4340SQD that

The lid switch is on the top left side of the top cover. If it is bad the machine will fill and stop. The lid switch must be good for the machine to agitate and spin.

My washer fills , sits, does not agitate, empties and spins.

I had the same problem. Take the agitator off by pulling on it extremely hard - use allen wrenches in the slots on the sides to help. This exposes the "air bell coupler" - take the 7/16" bolt out and slide it off. Chances are the spline is stripped out inside. The part is 5 bucks online

Roper washer, agitater stripped?

It sounds like you need to replace your agitator dogs (yes, there is such a thing). They are small plastic pieces that are used by the upper portion of the agitator to grip as it turns. This is a common problem when they wear out. If you go to searspartsdirect.com, there's an illustration of what I'm talking about under the "Agitator, Basket and Tub Parts" heading. Item number 10 (part number 80040) is what you need to replace. Just type in your complete model number in the "Search by Model Number" block. The following link provides you with step-by-step instructions on how to do this:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r823955-replacing_agitator_dogs

You can find these same parts at repairclinic.com and a cheaper price. Use the part number provided. I hope this helps you.

PS The item is priced for a package of 4.

If the agitator does not spin at all, then it is your motor coupling. If the agitator tries to spin but cannot, then it is your dog agitators.

Mo del RAB 1121EW1 serial number CG 402 1770

This is a direct drive washer so there is no belt. The drive coupler that connects the motor to the tub may need to be replaced.
