We bought this used and it may just be that it's broken--but we can't get the record drawer open and didn't know if there was some trick we are missing. (Yes, we pressed--"drawer open" !)

Cleaning will not help if it plays fine and does not record.
The previous owner was right, those can only record on "Music CD-R or Audio CD-R" . If it does not have that printed on the disc, it willnot record with it. many people think that a CD-R they use in the computer will work, but they won't. So make sure you are not using a CD-R meant for a computer.
Try using Sony, they work good for me on most all recorders I repair.
If that does not work, you may just need it to be serviced, or take it back to the guy you bought it from and get your money back. He sold you a bad recorder. They are very exspensive to repair most of the time.
Sorry I did not have better news, good luck and let me know if you need any more help.
Is the motor spinning to try to open the drawer? Can you hear it? Can you get something under the tray edge to try to 'help' it out when pressing eject?
Reading the instruction manual - yes, life experience has taught me some really useful stuff! -
Under 'Discs for recording' on page 7 it says at end of section
IMPORTANT:
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of PHILIPS audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only'
Roughly translated I read this to me - 'don't blame us if the set don't work using other (non-compatible) discs' !!
