Our playstation 3 won't read games but will play regular DVD's and CD's

Is it a regular DVD? Or a burned one. It is possible, that if it was a burned copy, the format might not be supported. If it is a regular DVD, than only 2 options it could be. The easy one is, check the DVD. Are there any big scratches or smudges that would cause it not to read. If it is a new DVD, than there is a real possibility that your Blue-Ray disk drive is on it's last leg and will need to be replaced.

99/100 times the blu-ray laser itself has failed. There are two kinds KES-400A and KES-410A.

You can replace it yourself for around $50 or send it into Sony and pay $150+ for the same repair.

If you check the back of your PS3 it has a part number like: CECH11

Also try playing an audio CD and a regular DVD.

What happens?

Your blu ray drive is shot. The drive motor has to operate much faster to read a game then it does a regular DVD. Eventually your PS3 wont play DVDs but will play CDs.. same reason.. then nothing.
I would consider replacing now. Ebay is a good place actually to buy good blu ray drives for cheap. if your not under warranty I could get you a guide on how to do it, or you could send it to me and I could do it for you. Either way. let me know

It's quite likely due to a weak Blu Ray laser. The DVD and BluRay are 2 different lasers so it could still be able to read and play DVD/CD but not the BluRay games.

Also Check the regional code on the disc which should be compatible with the regional codes which can be played by the PS3

turn console onto standby and leave a min
then hold button in till it beeps 3 times and release
then do this again it will beep 3 times last one being double quick beep
a menu should appear
click on the one that says files this will restore your lens reader

The lens on the PS3 might have developed a fault which is preventing it from reading games but playing DVD, CD ect. Try cleaning the lens with a dvd disc cleaner first.

try cleaning the disk with cleaner if you dont have cleaner use water
