Just open it up and have a look, could be some plastic parts of the tray has been bent by someone accidentally pushing it in when locked, or something might mess with sensors telling the unit what position the tray is in.

The tray position switch is disconnected or bent from disassembly. I expect one plug wire is off when you put the unit back. The tray switch is mounted so the tray strikes the switch when fully in and fully out.
