System tray icon is red

99% of the time this is related to the sound card driver installed. Either you do not have the correct driver or you have not loaded the sound card driver at all for your machine. When you can't see th Audio icon in the system tray (by the time) this means windows cannot see any device which can play sounds.
My advice is to go back to system website (hp.com, Dell.com) look up your machine in there Support -> Drivers area and download the sound driver again. Once installed properly you should see the speaker icon appear in the system tray as expected.

Look for yellow exclamation mark, or a red x under the sound and video game options
if you see either marks, right click on the device in question and look for 'update driver', or enable device.

If there are no marks (yellow exclamation, or red x) then the sound card is likely installed and is just muted.

look in the system tray for a speaker icon, right click on it, look for a unmute option, or trey raising the volume

control panel-network connection-right click on "local area connection" at bottom select "properties" click a check in the box that says "show icon in notification are when connected"

Go to Control Panel >> Network Connection >> Right Click - Properties >> there's 2 check box, and check for " Show icon in notification area when connected.

There's an actual internal speaker, and there's the audio out jack, either at the back or front, or sometimes at both locations.
It seems to me you're getting no sound from the audio out jack, where you normally connect powered, amplified speakers. Have you checked the volume setting on these speakers? Turn the volume up as high as it goes.
Check in the system tray area (bottom right corner of your desktop, in Windows) for an icon that looks like a speaker cone.
If found, and if you hover your mouse over the icon, in Vista, it should display your audio card name and model. If you click over the icon, the volume bar shows up. Slide the volume up as high at it goes and try playing some music from your PC. Does that satisfy you?
If not, right click over the icon and you may be shown a menu of different options to do with your audio system. There should be one for a "mixer", where you would turn different things on or off, or where you can boost your volume or microphone sound level.
If there's no icon in the system tray, try going to the Device Manager, from the Control Panel window, and see whether your audio component is enabled and working Ok. A yellow icon, or red, over any component is an indication that there's a problem with the device. If that's the case, try right clicking on the device and uninstall it from the ensuing menu.
Next, reboot your machine and Windows should reinstall it with the proper drivers and your Pc should be back to normal.

If the red light is flashing by itself, it means the printer thinks a cartridge is low on ink. Have a look at what the Status Monitor thinks (right click the printer Icon in the bottom Right-Hand corner and select Ink Monitor). This will show which cartridge it is. If it's the new colour cartridge, it means the cartridge is faulty (then replace it), or it is a refilled cartridge that hasn't had it's chip reset to "full". For this you will need a chip resetter, available on E-Bay very cheaply. If it's the black cartridge then replace it.

If both green and red lights are flashing, it usually means the Waste Ink Pads in your printer are saturated with ink and the waste ink "protection" counter has exceeded its limit. You can restore your printer to a working condition immediately by using the SSC utility - download from:

Install it, and double click the ssc printer icon in the bottom right corner (System Tray). Choose Configuration and set your printer type (C4x), then close the ssc window. Now right click the ssc icon in the sytem tray and choose Protection Counter. You should see that the current count is above the limit; then choose reset to set it to zero. You will need to fib about having changed the waste ink pads! Turn the printer off then back on again. This will stop the lights flashing and restore normal operation.

However, remember that eventually ink will overflow from the waste ink area and make a dreadful mess, so you must change the waste ink pads before this happens. This requires the disassembly of the printer.

If you decide to have a go at replacing the ink pads yourself, report back and I will provide further help. It is a pretty simple job once someone explains how to get the case apart!

I think you need to reset the setting for showing on task bar, as in de-select the option, click ok, and then go back and select to show in task bar.

If this does not work, you system tray on the taskbar may be hiding some icons.

Delete printer using Control Panel and Turn off PC.

Reinstall from scratch

Try mapping that drive as a network share under windows XP. This is done from "MY Computer" Map network drive. The set up your backups to back up the network drive you have created. If that does not do it then there is a contention between vista and xp as to the owner of the drive. Making the drive a mapped network drive should resolve this as neither should have ownership. Thats my best quess without knowing in detail your network setup.
