If your computer does not recognize the USB device, first try method 1 to work around this issue. Method 1: Initiate recognition of the USB device by using Device Manager To initiate recognition of the USB device by using Device Manager, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. The Device Manager window opens. Click to select your computer as the location for the scan. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. Windows XP recognizes the new device. Close the Device Manager window. If this method resolves the issue, you are finished. If this method does not resolve the issue, go to method 2. Method 2: Disable power management of the USB hub Note If you perform the following procedure, you may also reduce the battery life on a portable computer. Use this method if method 1 does not work. To disable power management of the USB hub, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. The Device Manager window opens. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click a USB Root Hub in the list, and then click Properties. The USB Root Hub Properties dialog box is displayed. Click the Power Management tab. Click to clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each USB Root Hub in the list. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. Windows XP recognizes the new device. Close the Device Manager window. If this method does not resolve the issue, go to method 3. Method 3: Restart the computer To initiate recognition of the USB device, first unplug the USB device and restart the computer. My ipod not recognized by itunes in order to reinstall the software

Connections b> The USB cable must be securely connected both to the iPod and to the selected USB port on the computer. Reattach the cable at both ends, and click "Computer" in the start menu to see if the iPod is shown connected to the drive for that USB port. b> Drivers b> If the drivers of the computer responsible for the USB interface are out of date, malfunctioning or incorrectly installed, that may also cause the iPod to not be recognized by the computer. If this is the case, the device may not appear in iTunes and there may be an exclamation point next to the device in Device Manager. b> Software b> The latest version of iTunes is recommended to best communicate with the various models of iPod. Go to the iTunes website or click "Help" and "Check for Updates" in iTunes to install the most recent update. Further, the computer must be running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 for PCs, or OS X v.10.4.11 or later for Macs. b> Battery b> The iPod's battery must have sufficient charge to be recognized in iTunes; charge it either via USB connection or another power source if the indicator shows a low battery. Once the battery has charged, try to connect the iPod to the computer via USB cable again.

Will not recognize unit via the usb cable

MP3 players use the popular USB connection which sometimes produces errors while connecting. These messages are similar to the "Device Not Recognized" error received with various USB devices. Fixing an MP3 player is sometimes specific to the brand, but they are so similar that most can be fixed the same troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

Device Manager

Click "Start" and go to "Control Panel." Double-click "System" and locate the Hardware tab to find the Device Manager. Vista and Windows 7 users can just type "Device Manager' from the start menu.

Locate "Disk Drives" from the list and double-click "Portable Device." If there is an exclamation mark or other error on the device, go to the "Drivers" tab.

Click "Uninstall" and remove the player. Restart the computer and attach the player reinstall the drivers.

Anti-virus conflicts

Plug the player into a different computer to see if it gets recognized. If it does not, contact the manufacturer to find out if it is broken.

Turn off your anti-virus program on your PC if the device works on other computers. Reinstall the drivers using the device manager as described in section 1.

Plug in the player to confirm the connection.

Other solutions

Check the battery level and make sure the batter is not low or depleted. A low battery will sometimes prevent the player from connecting. Let it charge from the power cord, if necessary.

Verify that you have at least Service Pack 1 installed. Go to the Start menu and type "Run." Press Enter.

Type "Winver" in the box and press "Enter." The Windows version will be displayed along with any installed service packs. Download a service pack from Microsoft, if applicable.

Remove the player from the USB port and push a pin into the reset hole located on the bottom. Reconnect to see if the problem is resolved.

Check the connection to make sure it's secure. The cable should fit firmly into both the player and the computer. Connect to a different USB port if you have one available.

Download updated firmware or use the MP3 Recovery Tool provided under Resources (mp3 players).

Tips & Warnings

A bad cable will sometimes prevent a good connection. Use a different one to isolate the cause.

Usb device not recognize

You mentioned that you uninstalled the unknown device from the Device manager. If you uninstall it then connected your usb flash drive you will see an error again on your device manager. This means that the driver for your usb port is not properly installed.

To install it, visit dell website, look for the model of your machine and locate the driver, download it then install from your machine.
