Mitsubishi TV Model #WS65903 - Green Shadow Lines on Screen

PROBLEM: I have a 1999 Mitsubishi TV, model #WS-65903 that displays green shadows on the right side of all the text that appears on the screen.

BACKGROUND: The TV is 10 years old. It gives a good HDTV picture, though it's not as bright or crisp as newer TV's that I've seen. The TV picture feed is from a DirecTV HD-DVR model 200-700.

MAIN ISSUE: There are green shadow lines on the right side of all the text that is displayed on the screen (commercials, scores, names, etc).

SECONDARY ISSUE: When watching sports, the banner on the top of the screen showing the score, time, etc is cut off so you can't read it. Only the tip of the bottom shows. Mostly on FOX.

MY RESOLUTION ATTEMPTS: I have completed the Advanced Convergence a couple of times. While it does help a little, it will not clear either problem. It did help a little on the shadow lines, but not much. While doing the Blue and Red convergence adjustments I noticed the green line was off in a number of areas. However, I understand that that gun is not adjustable. So, I adjusted the red and blue as best as I could.

I had the top Mitsubishi dealer send out a tech to deal with the banner problem but he couldn't fix it either. He said it was due to the age of the TV and that the alignment & convergence could only do so much.

I would appreciate any information on what I could do the help make the green shadow lines go away or anything I can adjust to get the score banner to show up more. Thanks.

Thank you for such a quick and detailed response. When the tech was here he was working on the screen adjustment in the tech mode. He adjusted it as best he could. He also did a convergence adjustment. This was over a year ago.

When I did the Advanced Convergence adjustment today I was in the customer menu. I did not know how to get into the tech menu.

My specific model is WS-65903. Yes, I purchased it late in 1998 and received it in early 1999.

I will do the convergence adjustment from the tech mode menu tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

I am also experiencing a new issue. This started a few days ago.

There are thin blue lines running diagonally across the screen from the upper left side to the lower right side. This is happenning about every 10 minutes........they show up more when the picture is dark. Any suggestions as to how I correct this issue? Thanks again for the quick response.

Thanks again for the quick response.

I took off both speaker grill covers and I cannot see any black plate to remove. There are screws holding the big plastic "V" cover that's around the drop down input buttons but thats it. There is also a big cover on the right side that has a warning sticker about the 220 standby power. Is it behind that? Sorry for the confusion. Thanks.

Forgot to mention. I can not get into the Tech menu. When I press Menu on my remote the Setup, Captions Channel, etc options come up and I can't enter the numbers your suggesting (2,3 5,7) to get into the Tech convergence adjustment menu. The Channel, Title input comes up on the top of the screen.

Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Something is not right here--The green is adjustable in the TECH menu--did this person adjust or try to adjust in the customer or the TECH menu?

If you confirm actual model number I can tell you how to get into the TECH menu--yes--green will not adjust in customer menu--it determines geometry and is only adjusted in the TECH menu.

Also, this set requires any convergence adjustments to be done in 480 and then in 1080--if only adjusted in one mode the other will still be bad.

Let me know if you know how to adjust in TECH menu or not--with exact model number I can tell you how to get there.

If this helps you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

BY THE WAY: there are two TECH menus--one for adjusting convergence and another for adjusting width, height and all sorts of things--if the picture is cut off top/bottom or sides it can be adjusted in the second TECH menu.

Each requires a 4 digit code with the original remote to access.

I am going to tell you how to get into each of the TECH menus.

WS-65903 is actually a model first sold in 1998.

Menu, 2,3,5,7 and enter will take you to the TECH ADJUST mode--watch what you do.

Menu 2.3.5.9 and enter will take you to the TECH convergence mode-same instructions as the customer mode but hit home twice to save and exit.(four will change from coarse to fine)

In the TECH adjust mode you have to be very careful if you adjust to not make a mistake--home should save any adjustments you make but note the numbers for each item and use the cursor to change them--if you make a mistake there it will be permanent--set will store adjustments you make.

Yes, the set has behind the front speaker grill an inspection plate--remove it and you will find a black block--focus/screen control block.

Go to a blank video input when it does it--locate blue screen control and turn it down a little-if you get faint curved retrace lines most likely the blue screen control is set a little too high.

you have to remove the wood center piece--the inspection plate is behind it.

Ws-65611 color shadows

You need to turn down the voltage on all 3 crt's. You have a red one, a blue one and a green one. Slowly adjust the knob down until you don't see the shadow any more. Then adjust your color in the user menu.

After having our tv in storage for aver a year, now it has a green shadow to it. What could be wrong/

Not sure I understand what you mean by green shadow. I would check the fluid in the green and blue CRTS and verify they are clear. I would do this if the green color seemed fuzzy or blotchy looking on the screen.

When looking on a blank screen, do you see any arc lines of either green, blue or red? If so, you would need to lower the screen voltage for that particular CRT.

Tv screen is squeezed only straightens out if i bump the top of tv

This is likely your convergence IC solder connections. Does it look bowed and rainbow colored? The red, green, and blue will be mis-aligned causing a shadow effect. If you can bump it then the ICs (chips) are still ok, it just needs resoldering.

Green shadow on white objects Mitsubishi WS - 55857 The right edge of white objects have a green shadow that gets larger as the camera pans away. I've adjusted convergence and turned off...

Its been a long time since I did it, but I believe you can adjust the green convergence grid by using the service menu. I found instructions on doing this over on the avsforum message board (years ago) so you might want to search there.

MITSUBISHI 65" WIDESCREEN MODEL WS 65809 (GREEN GONE, SMALL RED LINES)

in the front cover turn up screens on all colors till you see retrace lines, then back them down to where dissappear. enless you know the correct voltage to set it. as for the green. i would try the red crt on the green and see if it looks ok. if so then replace crt circuit or check transistors on crt circuit may also need to change the driver on the heat sync.

Green shadows surrounding bright whites

finally a consumer that gives us plenty of info :)
sounds like an overdriven green tube, the only thing you can try is to find the G2/Focus block assembly, either behind front speaker grill or remove back of set and look for a black box approximately 5"X5" , this box will have 6 philips type adjustment screws(plastic) 3 are for focus, do NOT adjust these,
the other 3 are marked "screen" the center screen adjustment screw is for green, turn it VERY slowly counterclockwise while the set is running and pray that your problem dis-appears, be advised that this is a HIGH VOLTAGE device so one hand in your back pocket the other hand turns the screwdriver, if the problem does not go away you have a poor green tube, good luck, sorry I can`t give you the exact location of the G2/Focus block, manufacturers move them to different places every year.
