Tip & How-To about GPS

STOP THIEVES by reprogramming your "home" into your GPS

Breaking news in the ongoing battle against crime involves your GPS and your garage door opener. Many thieves are now breaking into cars and stealing both the GPS and the garage door remote. Their motive: turn on the GPS and push the "home" feature. The GPS will then lead the thief to your home where the garage door opener will provide access to your garage and if it is attached, to your home.

THE FIX: Reprogram your GPS so that "HOME" takes you to a restaurant near your home or to a police station near your home. At least that way, the thief will not know where you live.

Many cars are broken into these days because owners are not aware of how desperate many thieves have become. The prize is often the GPS which sells on the street for $100.00 or more. Do not leave your GPS in sight when you park your car, do not use a windshield mount which leaves a tell-tale ring on your windshield, and do not use a plastic disk stuck to your dash [all signals to a thief that there is a GPS hidden somewhere in the vehicle]. The best idea is to keep your GPS and your garage door remote both locked up in your trunk whenever you park your car. Regards, Joe

Did you try the passenger side or back door?
Any locksmith with the right equipment should be able to open it. If you live far from locksmiths, the Police may be able to help you, sometimes they carry thieves tools to legally get into vehicles.

Chances are pretty good if you simply replace your old garage door system with a new one, you would not be entitled to any compensation.

If you want peace with your neighbors, just replace the old system and call it good.

If you can't replace it right now, or you really want the neighbor to take responsibility, then I would recommend that you send a letter to the neighbor that outlines the problem very specifically and inform them that they cannot continue to open your garage door and leave it it open because you are concerned about the pipes freezing and about intruders breaking in. Remind them that this problem did not exist until they installed their system and you would really appreciate their assistance in getting this problem resolved.

You do not have a cause of action against the company that installed their garage door system because you didn't have any type of contract with them. You do potentially have a cause of action against the neighbor. Have you considered having an independent garage door installer come out and assess the situation? Just because the tech from the original installation company was clueless doesn't mean another company wouldn't be able to fix this.
