We have a leak on the pump around the manafold and the gearbox. Has anyone had this problem that you know of? Could it be that the packing has gone out? The washer is 2 to 3 years old and runs great just need to repair this problem to put it back into service.

Usually when water is leaking from in between the manifold and the oil side of the pump, the high and low pressure seals (a.k.a. packings) are worn out.

Is the engine pipe secured at the gearbox with a good bracket to take the load off the manifold check that the exhaust is clear and not blocked at cadlic convertor,check that the manifold is not getting red hot after a good run.
Brake peddle should be hard, if bake peddle soft check master cylinder or replce, try bleeding brake system too. Ceck if check valve is bad this is located on vacumm line from intake manafold to booter pump body. brake seal at check valve booster pump should hiss if not check vaccumm line for leaks if no leak in line replace check valve they don't cost much.
If you have a leak around the manifold you will likely need to replace it. Is this an air manifold or a water manifold? Manifold come in two types. One is for PVC pipe and the tubes are glued into the little sockets and the other type have barbs and the tubes are glued and clamped on.
test the compression, also look for a intake manafold leak, take a can of carb cleaner and spray around were the intake mounts to the cylinder head if the engine smouth out replace the gasket or the injector o-rings.....we do a lot of valve jobs on these engines so do a compression test if below 100 psi remove the head and replace the valves and most likly the valve seats....good luck

this happens on a lot of these when the mileage gets up above a 100,000 spray carb cleaner around the gaskets
this is not a weekend mechanics type job because you could damage something else taking it out.best advice is to fit a manual gearbox which here in spain you could buy from a accident damaged car with the flywheel and clutch and starter motor for around 300€ need to change the drive shafts as well i think
Depending on which motor you have will determine how to change the pack. I am not familiar with the 4 cylender motors but I assume that they are in the open. If you have the V6 then you are in for a little work. There are 3 packs in the front of the motor that are easly accessable. You will see them right on top. The other 3 are hidden under the intake manafold. If you are certian that it is a pack from under the manafold, Cylenders 4,5, or 6. Then do a search on how to change the spark plugs and you will find a very good page on how to get that manafold off. You will need new upper gaskets after removing the manafold. The new pack, and you may want to throw a new set of spark plugs in while you are there. If you have close to 100k miles on it then I would recomend that you change them while the intake is off.
