Should I be lubricating my dremel (395) tool?

It sounds like my dremel tool (395) needs to be lubricated. It has a squealing sound when turned on which is differnet from its normal sound. What should I use and how.

Just a comment-Based on experience, I would go with BOTH their suggestions and order brushes and bearings. That squeal is definitely the bearing; it is a sleeve bearing; RPMs too high for a ball bearing to last and the sleeve bearing has a solid lubricant cast into it.

It could also be the commutator brushes, which wear out on these.

My dremel 8220 is giving a whining sound like it needs to be lubricated. I don't see anything about that in the manual

Sounds like the bearings may be going out. These are sealed and can't be lubricated. Sometimes the brushes can whine and might be found on eBay. I say run it til it quits and buy new.

This tool was a hand-me-down, and I assume it's been around for a while, so maybe it's on its way out. Most of the time it runs OK, but occasionally it slows way down when it's turned to 5.

If this is a Dremel or knock-off, it may have a phosphor-bronze sleeve shaft bearing, impregnated with graphite for lubrication,
These do wear out and must be occasionally replaced. it isn't difficult to do (on mine) and the sleeve bearing is (or was) not terribly costly.

Establish your model number you should probably read the thread on this here:

Have Dremel MOD 395 motor runs and speed control works bot shaft won't turn--worth fixing ??? and how

Hi Larry, The tool that you require parts for was discontinued many years ago. Limited parts are available from Dremel. Inside the tool is a flex coupling and spline driver. The flex coupling is # 2615294309 and the price is about $ 1.25. This is the hollow plastic sleeve about 1" long with grooves on the inside, that goes between the motor shaft and the output shaft. The spline driver is # 2615294308 for about $ 1.00. Spline driver sits on the direct end of the motor shaft. The flex coupling sits over the spline driver. Spline driver is about 1/4", hard plastic with grooves on the outside. Total shipping for orders under $ 5.00 is $ 2.50. Orders over $5.00 is $ 4.00. There could be a tax charge depending on which state you live in. Here is how to order: Call Dremel Customer Service at 1-800-437-3635 , Monday-Friday from 7 am to 6 pm central time. VISA, MasterCard or Discover to place a Visa, MasterCard or Discover order. To order by mail: Dremel 4915 21st Street Racine, WI 53406 USA 1-800-437-3635 ext. 3636

I posted a simple question about lubricating Dremel type rotary tools and no one replied in 3 weeks!!!!!

There are no simple questions where power tools are concerned. People will shy away from answering questions where there are too many variables and possibilities of someone getting hurt. For example; here you don't even include the make or model number of your tool, this affects EVERYTHING. Is it a high-end tool or a cheap knockoff? You say "Dremel type tool" which indicates to most mechanics it's not a Dremel and probably is a cheap knockoff. How does it work, how is it assembled and what parts are used between moving parts? Does it have sealed bearings that should almost never be lubricated or bushings which, if lubricated, will get gummed up. Is there a transmission (gears) between the motor and output shaft? You don't state why you would want to lubricate a tool of this type, most are designed to work on the lubrication they get at the assembly factory for their expected lifetime. The wrong type of lubrication is also bad, too thin and it will evaporate when it gets hot, too thick and will actually make the motor work harder, in the wrong place, it will attract dust or dirt and get gummy. I understand your frustration with trying to get an answer (indicated by all the !!!!) but if you don't help the people who may be able to help you by giving this basic information they aren't going to attempt to provide you with answers that may get you hurt if parts break or your house or business burnt down if the electrical parts short out.

The motor on my dremel 395 works but the bit doesn't turn

there is a coupling between the motor and the spindle that has probably cracked or stripped out. I suggest going to Dremel.com and getting an original replacement part for this. They are not hard to install.

My Dremel 395 type 4 does not run until I spin the chuck and then only runs at high speed.

Sounds like a switch or brushes. You can go to Dremel.com and they have a toll free number for their tech services and you can also download a breakdown for this tool.

Dremel 395 in the middle of drilling sea glass and the collet and bit stop turning while the motor is still running fine! GRRRRR Thanks for any suggestions!

sounds like the rubber connector between the motor and collet.i use rubber tubing and hot glue to keep it working. bad news is you have to disassemble it to install a new connector.

Dremel rotary tool removing shaft of attachment

They can be stubborn. I would take padded pliers to the nut, and not focus on removing the shaft until the nut is loosened. Be careful not to damage the nut. You may also try spraying a light lubricate at the base of the nut and hold the dremel upside down so that some could possible get behind the nut.
