We are renting the house and we have a '90 model Ruud, unknown model. It takes a 14X25 filter. It made a buzzing noise, almost like an electronic alarm, just before ignition for about twenty seconds several times last night. The electronic ignition heats up, it lights the gas, and it provides and blows heat. The electronic control has a green light when it is working properly, and it flashes green during ignition, but stays solid most of the time. Sometimes the unit does not appear to be working, and it has a yellow or red light. I do not find a power switch on the outside of the unit, but, by setting the thermostat to off and turning it back to heat, the electronic control does reset. Can you tell me anything about the buzzing, which it is no longer doing? Is there a problem that is causing the electronic control to go into a yellow light or red light mode?
The yellow or red light would mean a control board that is bad or going bad. The buzzing sound could just be the transformer not uncommon to hear a buzzing sound from the transformer.

over heating its self, it could be a blocked and not getting the right air flow or the sensor for the heat control is on its way out. check the filter if this model has one remove all dust from the intake, check that the fan is working, if the motor has been making any buzzing or funny sounds this can be the problem too. buzzing is the starter motor humming or clicking the motor is failing.
try spinning by hand when the unit make the buzzing sound. to see if the capacitor is bad. If the fan runs replace the cap. If not motor probably is bad. See if it spins freely. this is a good starting place. need to check if the buzzing is the contactor and there is no power to the condensor. The contactor will buzz even though the main breaker is off or tripped
The buzzing sound is from the contactor and only means you have low voltage at the unit,Check and make sure you have 240 volts at the unit and post back.
This phenomenon is the phone lines and phone instrument rectifying the RF signal from your cell phone as it communicates periodically with the cell sites. The energy is rectified (turned into voltage) by the phone lines and appears as a buzzing pulsing noice in the home phone. This will trash a fax compeltely. There is NO solution except to thrn of the cell phone or orient it away from phones and phone lines sufficiently to stop the interaction. You could put hte phone in a RF proof bag (metalized film) which would then prevent it from receiving an incoming cell call. Either way, you lose some usability of either home or cell phone for the duration of the issue.
Is the buzzing in the outdoor half of the system? If so
your possibilities are.
buzzing could be the contactor. In the control compartment on the side of the unit there is a small brown component that has wires to one side and the other . There are contacts in the center like points on a car. If the points are pulled in look for ants in between the contacts. Always secure power to the outdoor unit before touching anything inside. If the points are pulled in check your breaker to the outdoor unit. Turn the breaker off then back on. Breakers sometimes trip but look ok.
Buzzing could be thee coil to the contactor itself, sometimes with age the coil will breakdown and cause noise.
if you give me more information I can focas in closer to a solution
