My asus apparently doesn't show the home page where the tabs to access most programs seems to not be shown, ive system restored various times and seems to fail to show the home. Its a linux operating system

Do a system restore ,back to time when it was working
START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SYSTEM RESTORE>SHOW MORE RESTORE POINTS
Choose the date ,restore ,will put all files back working order as to that date

If you have the original disc drive installed (and the original OS), try pressing F9 repeatedly after turning on the computer. (Sometimes, it can be hard to get the timing right - the button press needs to be seen after the POST and before Windows loads. If you see Windows starting to load, let it finish loading and then shut down the computer and try again.)

This will access the recovery partition and reformat the computer and restore the machine to the factory state. Follow the on-screen directions and make sure that you have saved your personal data elsewhere.

However, if your computer has the ASUS boot booster, you will need to disable this feature to access the recovery program. Try pressing F2 or Delete (depending on your machine) to enter the BIOS with the same timing as the above use of F9. Then find the option to Disable the boot booster. Then press the F9 key on another start up cycle. My ASUS computer doesn't have this feature so I'm not sure where it may be in the BIOS (if on your computer).

Asus offers a WinPE wipe and recovery option for some of their computers that can be put on a USB flash drive. http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20091019013723218&board_id=20&model=Eee+PC+1005HA&page=1&SLanguage=en-us has the procedure for one of their other models.

At that point there is a choice to start in "Safe Mode". Try that, and see if it starts. (It will take a longer time to start this way.) If that works, the display may be different from what you are used to, as it starts in VGA Mode, since most drivers won't be loaded. If it does start, you probably added something that is interfering with Windows, either software, or driver. Try to remove the last program you installed. If it does not start you should have an option in the black screen to do a system restore. Try the latest restore point shown, and, if need be, work your way back from there.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

It seems you are stuck in a windows loading loop

Please do the following

1) Go into safe mode (swith the pc on and keep pressing F8 repeatedly until you have a menu presented to you, from the menu choose safe mode)

2) Once loaded click on Start>Programs>Accessories> System Tools> System restore

And restore your computer back to a point before the update was done



if it still loops when using safe mode through the method shown above then unfortunaltey you will have to reformat the PC

Have you tried installing MBAM and running a scan since doing the system restore? I would recommend it, just to be safe. Or you could follow the steps to create a post of your HijackThis logs and have somebody knowledgable take a look at it.
McAfee is not one of the highest rated AV apps out there these days, though few can prevent you from unsafe browsing habits. See AV Comparatives for a 3rd party review of the various AV programs and how they stack up against one another. Avira is a good free one, if you're interested. All of them should be supplemented by a good antispyware program, like Defender or SuperAntiSpyware, and an occasional online scan.
Finally, have a look at this page, this page, and this one for some good information about spyware & malware in general, and safe browsing in particular.
I'm glad to hear that you were able to restore safely out of that situation.
Once your system is safely scanned and shipshape, you should create a new restore point, label it as safe, then remove all the older restore points by following these instructions. That will remove even a restore point that still contains the BHO you had problems with. If you find yourself downloading things from the net, uncertain or not of the content, it's a good practice to set restore points ahead of time to create a safe haven, just in case. Hi, you will need to use the system restore process to restore your computer back to when it was working, its most likely a bug that is affecting it, first run your antivirus scan, if no luck follow these steps to restore your pc back.

Use System Restore After you've decided to use System Restore to revert your system to a previous state, start the System Restore Wizard and follow the prompts. To use the System Restore Wizard, make sure you're logged on as an administrator, and then follow these steps:
1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
2.
On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
3.
On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to, as shown in Figure 2, and then click Next.

You might try system restore option and restore it to a date you know it worked well

After reviewing the stability of your system, you can choose another restore point or undo this restoration. Just open System Restore and make the appropriate choice. After you use System Restore, you'll have an additional task, Undo my last restoration, on the System Restore Welcome page. Remember that you'll have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore point.
If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is bootable into one of these modes.

Try booting into safe mode and accessing it from there.

To get into safe mode, press F8 when you turn on your computer and keep pressing it until the menu appears from which you can select safe mode.
