I had this same problem. I finally noticied that the problem occurred consistently on the right side of the paper feed. I discovered that a little part along the right side of my drum unit (just inside the paper feed area) had disconnected and was loose inside the drum unit itself. Once this little part was placed back into it's rightful place, VOILA! Problem solved! Hope this helps!
i will try this and get back to you unless i end up throwing the printer out into the garden! ive spend so much time trying to solve this!i will try this and get back to you unless i end up throwing the printer out into the garden! ive spend so much time trying to solve this!

Brother Hl 2140 Printing on thick paper, labels and envelopes 2 When the back output tray is pulled down, the printer has a straight paper path from the manual feed slot through to the back of the printer. Use this paper feed and output method when you want to print on thick paper, labels or envelopes.
Open the back cover
Open the manual feed slot cover.
Using both hands, slide the manual feed slot paper guides to the width of the paper that you are going to use.
Using both hands, put one piece of paper or one envelope in the manual feed slot until the front edge of the paper or envelope touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull in the paper, let go.
• Put the paper into the manual feed slot with the side to be printed face up. • Make sure that the paper or envelope is straight and in the proper position on the manual feed slot. If it is not, the paper or the envelope may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper jam. • Do not put more than one piece of paper in the manual feed slot at any one time, as it may cause a jam. • If you put any Media (paper, envelope and so on) in the manual feed slot before the printer is in the Ready state, the media may be ejected without being printed on.
Just click on this link and you'll have the step by step procedure on how you'll clear paper jam. This troubleshooting works for HL-5140, HL-5150D, HL-5170DN brother printers.
There is some paper jam inside the printer .Please remove the cartridge and look inside the printer for paper jam. If paper jam is there , remove the paper . I hope it will help to solve the printer problem.
Usually there is a sensor right before the paper enters the fuser. If the paper sensor is bad the machine will stop feeding and output the error paper jam. This is probably the cuase if the paper stops in the same position all the time.
In that case try turning the toner and drum by hand (while it is out) can they turn? check the gears that corresponds to them in the machine?
put a marker on the very edge of the drum and put in after it says ready take out and look at the mark did it rotate?
Im pretty sure that the printer is broken... If you really want to spend twice as much on fixing your printer go ahead, but i sugest calling the company and asking for assistance they will probably send you a new 1 and then you just send them your odl 1 thats what i did..
Continuous paper jam.
