Maybe the DVD laser is damaged somehow. Try ripping the DVD movie and converting it to common video files to play on PS3. PS3 can play movies from USB sticks. Just transfer the converted DVD movies to a USB stick and you can play it directly using the built-in video player of your PS3. There are one laser for dvd, and one laser for bluray, If plays blu ray and not dvds you will need to replace the dvd laser.

Thats becouse it a BLU-RAY it is diffrent i figured out the hrd way 2 :P

Ok your laser is bad. You need to replace it. Your laser has a blu ray diode which lights up blue and reads ps3 games and blu ray games. Then it has a red diode which plays ps2 games dvds cds ps1 games. Your blu ray diode is burned up. You will have to replace the laser its pretty simple.

PS3 will play blu-rays just fine, but not DVD
A bad laser could affect the sound cause it can't read all the information from the disc. Try games as well and see if it does the same thing, sounds like a new drive is in order. There is one laser in those drives and require different strengths to read different discs. Also try a music disc that you know is good. If your still getting the same issue then get the drive replaced or just replace the laser if you have some technical knowledge.

PS3 will play DVDs but not Games. Replaced the hard drive, restored the files, still did not work.
Then the Blu-Ray part of the laser pickup assembly is defect. Since DVD's use a different laser from the pickup, the DVDs will read fine. However the Blu-Ray part is defective and needs to be replaced.

Like said above, It needs a new laser. It's a really common problem.

I buy mine at http://parts.consolerepairguy.com they run about $75 each.

I run a repair business and that place has best prices aside from Hong Kong which I don't trust.

I am unable to play dvds. The system starts with
Try other discs to see if the system is reading anything.

If it isn't then take a can of air and blow some into the drive to make sure there is no dust or dirt on the laser.

After that, try again and if the system isn't reading discs still then that means that the laser is bad. You can either replace the laser or the dvd drive itself.

No, the blu-ray laser is a three part laser. The blu-ray portion has gone out. Only way to fix it is to replace the laser.

the blue ray laser has two high energy beams at 450nm(bluelight) and 730nm (redlight). the highpower diode on your machine im afraid has failed. you need to install a new laser ..only 100 i charge or 160 from sony (150+TAX 2 week wait)
Now if you have the newer model laser KES410ACA, then you have 2 SEPARATE light sources...these tend not to fail as often
