I have a Honda EU 2000i generator. With eco switch on or off the generator revs up every few seconds. If I turn the choke to half it seems to almost get rid of the problem. What can be causing this?

Starving for fuel. the generator will always rev up when it is under a load or about to run out of gas. there will be a few adjustment screws on the carb... one for air and one for fuel. try increasing the fuel a quarter turn and see how that does

SOURCE: honda 2000 eu runs only at half choke once you

These motors have a heat automated choke release system and when it gets hot enough the choke will back off if the ports in the carb are clean and not blocked...if they are blocked clean the carb out real good.

Testimonial: "i will try cleaning out the ports i did suspect this myself i just did not want to tear it down with out a second opinion thank you i will stay in tou"

SOURCE: EU 3000is generator is running rough with Eco Throttle on

The air intake system on this unit is highly fine tuned. Make sure all covers including front battery cover, plenums, air intake system is properly installed and that any and all gaskets on doors and covers are not damaged.

SOURCE: Brand new Honda Generator 2000i

Hi and welcome to FixYa I am Kelly.

Things that must be verified.

1. Fuel selector: ON
2. Start run sw: ON
3. Oil Level : Full
4. Choke selector FULL ON for no more than 2 pulls initially The half choke then off
5. Spark at the Spark Plug YES? NO?
a. No spark suspect low oil level sensor is grounding the ignition either due to low oil level or it just is not working properly.

After doing all of the above...

Spark Plug WET or DRY? Dry and still won't start check fuel supply. If you use the choke with the start run switch in the off position the spark plug should get WET. Spark plug does not get wet... with choke on and ignition off. Fuel supply problem.

At this point I suspect either the Oil Level is incorrect or... that the FUEL SELECTOR is OFF.

If you need more help just respond here and we can press on.

Honda 3000is runs great on eco but hesitates and either stops the load source or stops running itself when under load.

Sounds like the throttle control motor is not adjusting the engine speed to compensate for the load. Does the generator rev up to full speed if you turn OFF eco with NO load?
Funny thing, I have one on my workbench that is doing pretty much the same thing. Runs on eco, revs up with eco off with no load, coughs, sputters and dies with a load in either mode. I will update with what I find when I figure it out in the next week or so. Have a new carb on order.

I swapped the carb and it made no difference. Still backfiring (rather dramatically) and won't stay running. I see on some other posts that Valve lash will cause this. It makes total sense as the exhaust valve gap actually tightens as the engine wears which would keep the exhaust valve slightly open when it ain't supposed to be allowing raw fuel to enter the muffler.
With this one I can believe it as it has a ton of hours on it and I know they have never been adjusted.
I will try to get a chance to do it over the weekend and update this post when I do.

Why does my Honda 2000i Generator run but produce no power?

Check to see if there is a breaker that has popped as a first diagnostic step

My EU 2000I ran my half ton AC unit for over a year. It now all of a sudden starts popping the 20 amp breaker anytime I turn it on. It only pulls 10 amps at startup. What's with this? Is it time to...

Make sure it isn't trying to start the HVAC with a locked compressor (IE it just turned off and is now trying to cycle on again) If it is shutting down due to low freq there is too much load for the HP the engine can deliver. That will cause too much current to flow and trip the breaker. Also be aware it takes 6 times current to start HVAC than to run it. How old is the generator? it may have normal engine wear and can no longer generate HP, Also when was it tunes up

Honda EU 3000is only runs on half choke

Overhaul the carb. When you have to choke it to run, there is not enough fuel getting in

Hi my honda generator runs for a couple of min then turns off this seems to happen more when its cold but happens when warm just not as much anyone have a idea of what it is

First off, Jason, what is the model number of your generator? It helps to know what product you're having trouble with so the correct information can be provided to you to help you solve your problem.

It sounds like the choke is staying on after starting. If you have an automatic choke, check for free movement of the choke spring and lever assembly (behind the carb). If it's a manual choke, remember to push it in once the engine is running smoothly (after 20 seconds).

It could be a fouled sparkplug or clogged air filter element too, but, again, without the model number it is very difficult to solve your problem.

You need to go to the Honda website and download a copy of the owner's manual for your specific generator and follow the step-by-step instructions for operating and troubleshooting your generator.

Here's the link to get your free online owners manual:

Hope you find this info Very Helpful and best regards!

The following helpful basic steps are from Honda:
To start your generator:
  1. Review your owner's manual to ensure familiarity with your generator's controls and operation.
  2. Move the generator outside.
  3. Check the fuel level and add more fuel if necessary.
  4. Check the oil level and add oil if necessary.
  5. Check the air filter and clean if necessary.
  6. Turn the circuit breaker off.
  7. Turn the fuel valve on.
  8. Start the generator.
  9. Allow the generator the warm up for a few moments before turning the circuit breaker on.
  10. Connect the appliances or the transfer switch if applicable.
