My calculator only works when it wants to. when i turn it on and press any button a 4 shows up on the screen. if i take the batteries out for a while and then put them in for a day and then try to use the calculator it seems to work but that is obviously abnormal. it hasn't worked all school year and i am pretty upset. i depend on that calculator for all my work and i need it fixed. my teacher said i could send my calculator back and have a new one but i dont know how if that is true or how to go about that.

While you are waiting for the eventual arrival of your new calculator, we may try to diagnose the ailing of the old one.

  1. Remove the old batteries. Buy a new set of batteries.
  2. Prepare the connectivity cables needed to connect the calculator to the computer. Choices are the TI USB silver cable, or the TI Graphlink Black serial cable.
  3. From education.ti.com, download the connectivity software compatible with the cable you will be using from this site. In all probability you will need the TI Connect 1.6 for Windows or Mac.
  4. From education.ti.com, download the latest operating system
  5. Install the Ti connectivity software on your computer.
  6. Wait for a day then insert the new batteries.
  7. Turn calculator ON
  8. Execute the TI Connect software.
  9. Connect calculator to computer.
  10. If you have an active Internet connection, click the Updates button on TIConnect main window.
  11. The software will download the latest OS and install it on the calculator.
  12. If you do not have an active Internet connection, run the TIConnect software.
  13. Connect calculator and computer. Turn calculator ON
  14. Drag and drop the OS which you downloaded on the TIConnect main window.
  15. The software will attempt to install the OS,
If for some reason this does not work, you can transfer the OS of a working calculator. You will need a cal-to-calc USB miniA to miniB cable or a calc-to-cal I/O cable.

Nothing shows up on the screen when I push any buttons. It will turn on, but after that nothing I push shows up on the screen. I have taken the batteries and the back up battery out.

Does the cursor show up at all? TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

Ti-83 won't turn on

Make sure you have the batteries in correctly. You may want to put fresh ones in for these procedures to work. The batteries alternate negative, positive, negative, positive. The first time I put my batteries in, I had one backwards and, it was hard to see that it was in backwards.

Make sure the IO ports at the top or, button of the calculator are clean. You don't want a dirty connection missing the procedure up later on.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.

Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds. Now, Pressing the [2nd] key followed by pressing and releasing the up arrow; repeat as necessary. Is the screen showing any activity? If not continue the process.
  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR],
reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the
message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message. If calculator did not display the message try pressing and releasing the [2nd] key followed by pressing and releasing the up arrow for one second. Goto step 2.
  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [DEL] key. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display
"Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the
TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system. If the calculator did not turn on connect the calculator to the computer and open Ti Connect. Next, open Device Explorer. Is the calculator asking to be installed? goto step 3.
  3. Steps to re-installing the operating system:

~Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the PC and the calculator.
~Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
~Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS. When or, if the calculator install the fresh OS goto step 4.

  4. Remove all of the batteries including the round lithium battery for 5 minutes. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and turn the calculator on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

If this process did not work for. Try re-doing the process and, extend the time by 5 minutes before you put all the batteries back in the calculator.

My ti 83 plus said that my battery life was low to change them. so i put 4 new batteries in and now it will not turn on at all.

I just changed the batteries in my calc and now it won't turn on. Is there a reset button?

There's no reset button. But TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If that doesn't work, remove all four AAA batteries. Press and hold the ON key for ten seconds. Replace the batteries and turn the calculator on. (You may have to adjust the screen as described above.)

If that doesn't work, please append a comment to this post and we'll go on from there.

My TI-84 Plus calculator won't work. It won't switch off by itself. When the batteries are reinserted, it says that all RAM has been cleared. When i press the 'ON' button again, the screen clears. but...

The Ram cleared message is normal after you change batteries. When you see this message you press the CLEAR button to erase it. You do not press the ON button again because the calculator is already ON. If you want to turn calculator OFF you press [2nd][ON] (OFF).

On certain calculators, pressing the ON button when calculator is already ON is interpreted as INTERRUPT the current command.

Will not turn on. Just stopped working. Batteries are brand new. Is the calculator fried?

Could be the screen has been dimmed so much that you can't tell that it's coming on. Press on and then 2nd button and the up arrow key. You may need to keep pressing 2nd and up arrow key. This is how you darken the screen. You can also lighten the screen which may be the problem you have by pressing 2nd and then the down arrow key.\

If this doesn't work, take out the internal battery that is located in a tiny door with a screw right above the 4 AAA batteries. Leave this out for about 8 hours and put it back in. Put in the AAA batteries and the calculator will be reset and may work.

A couple of days a go my when i turned my calculator on all these lines would appear. i pressed clear and they would go away. I thought it was a battery problem so i switched the batteries and now when i...

You may need to adjust your contrast. After turning the calculator on, press the 2nd button and then hold down the down arrow. This will lighten the screen if the contrast is the problem.

If this doesn't work, you might try resetting your calculator. Take out the backup battery that is located behind a little door with a screw right above the 4 AAA batteries. Leave all batteries out for about 8 hours and then reassemble. Hopefully when you turn it on, this will work. Good luck
