yes your best way is to do that! i would go to canon.com and download the latest update just so thats not a factor! and the if that doesnt work just uninstall the latest update, which can be done from windows control panel!
you could try to take the battery out ,to the machine do a reset.that message is firmware problem , if still the same only technician of CANON can repair the problem
Download connected is a sign that it has some how got into a firmware update mode. If reseting the unit with all cables (USB and Phone) disconnected for about 2 hours doesn't resolve the issue it will require servicing
