Hello Cindy im KBFC id like to say that your not doing anything wrong. see i also have a sansa shaker and what i can say to you that it dosent always play all the songs in it, simply because they are not supported its quiet dissapointing but the sansa dose play most mp3`s put into it. i dont know if its a long time scince you have posted this letter but if its not too late mabyee you can still take it back in exchange for something else. HOPE I SOLVED YOUR PROBLEM BYE!
Funny I found this forum because I've been having the same problem. My understanding is that subscription services (yahoo music, iTunes, etc.) don't come in an mp3 file format. You can, however, add songs from cd's you own.
Here's a link you might find helpful. It's from the Sansa Forums. One of the posters describes how you can convert files. I don't know how complicated it is. Good luck! :) http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=shaker&thread.id=121
I understand your frustration! I've been having the same problem. I just wasted TWO HOURS trying to get music to download onto this Shaker. The extra $40 for a better device would have been worth it! I can't afford to buy all the cd's that I'd need to fill this player with the songs my son likes. I'm thinking of bringing it back!
SHAKER ONLY TAKES MP3 FORMAT!!!!!
Use this site to change your format to the correct one for the sansa
shaker. This is the only way to load songs from your cds MWA will not
work at all. Must convert all files to MWA use site below

I treat my Sansa like a disk drive and simply transfer the files from my hard drive to the Sansa via Explorer. The tracks purchased from Napster can be downloaded to your hard drive. Then I exit Napster and use Windows Explorer to simply transfer the data. Works great for me for the past month!
