The F40 code can mean a thermal interrupt or a loss of connection between the control circuit board and the motor circuit board.

I found two possibilities for an F40 code.
1) Error Code F40 is that the thermal fuse has blown.
2) The F40 error code is a communication problem between the machine control board and motor control board. A bad connection might or might not cause this.
If you post your model number, or download the owner's manual from the above link, you'll probably find out what it means, at least.
