I have a dell Inspirion 9400 and it won't start. When I press the power button, all that happens is the power light and the dvd player light comes on and about 3 seconds it turns off. Does it with and without the battery and/or power adapter. doesn't sound like anything is running.

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning,lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugsinto the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside thejack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have totake the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto themotherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

Click start then type Device Manager in the little window. Go to networks adapters click the square or triangle beside it. Right click on the one that says wireless whithin the description and then click ENABLE if this does not work your wifi card is bad. You can purchase an aftermarket really cheap

Check the power settings. Start/Control Panel/Power Options. There is a setting separate from the screen saver to turn off the screen in the Power Options control panel. DVD playback overrides the power options settings.

Try this: Disconnect AC power, pull the battery, then press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Release the button, replace the battery & AC, and try booting.

(before you do anything remove the battery and th ac plug)remove the memory inside small door on the backside that has a "M" on it now once you remove the memory install the battery, power on if you hear a couple of beep tones you are half way there the motherboard is good so the problem is what you took out so there are two memory slot try them in the A slot one at a time.If the problem is memory replace it.

sounds like bad motherboard/power supply. Just to be sure though have you upgraded the ram? If you have more then one memory chip try siwtching out each one and seeing if it's boot farther. It's possible a dimm went bad or the port it's in went bad. Otherwise motherboard/powersupply

It shows no power on your laptop but it shows you the dvd player led comes on then off. I would suggest try the following:
1. Remove laptop battery, optical drive, hard drive and ram. Remove external peripherals as well. 2. Make sure AC Adapter is not yet connected to the laptop. Press and hold on the laptop's power button for 10 seconds to drain the power flea. 3. Connect the AC Adapter to a known good power outlet, check AC Adapter power LED if it is on. Try to sense if AC Adapter is not making a bit of noise when it is plugin to the wall power outlet. 4. Connect now the AC Adapter to the laptop. Check if AC Adapter LED stays on when it is connected to the laptop. If the LED stays on means the AC Adapter is fine. If the AC Adapter LED turned off check the AC Adapter pin that goes to the laptop AC socket if it is loose. 5. If AC Adapter stays on after connecting to the laptop try to power on laptop. If no power LED comes on then this is motherboard problem. 6. Before replacing the motherboard there is one checking needs to do. If you can open your laptop bottom part then good, do this when laptop is not connected to any power source. Try to reseat the laptop CMOS battery then try to power on laptop after, if still fails then replace motherboard. I hope this helps.

When i start my Dell 9400 up and it takes 10 mins to load to windows XP, , when the windows loading screen comes up the FANS go crazy. I then wait till i'm at the desktop at which point i immediately shut down the 9400 (which takes a further 7 mins) while the FANs are going crazy.

Now if i start the 9400 again it works normally.

I had to do this procedure everyday, untill today when i switched the 9400 on, waited till the desktop appaered and i removed the battery while the 9400 was on..

Now when i switch the 9400 on it powers up but i'm not getting anything on the screen
.

First try a different AC adapter
If no change then the issue is the motherboard. Often the AC adapter will fail then the battery discharges and you get the symptoms you describe.
SO AC adapter then MB
