If the hard drive is kaput, for practical purposes the recorded programmes are lost.

There is an outside chance it is a software problem and you should contact the manufacturer for advice...

There are several Freeware Text-to-Speech and some very expensive Text-to-Speech available on the internet, but to the best of my knowledge there is nothing available at any price that will do a proper job --the easy way.
This is why all "books on tape" or CD or whatever else, are performed by real people. Check in your local library. :-)
If you really want to voice record text books for your son to listen to, you are the only one who can do it. It is a labor of love. Or you can hire a student radio announcer.
At your local second hand stores you'll be able to get yourself a decent cassette tape recorder/player and a decent plug-in external microphone, with an ON-OFF switch. That should be an investment of not more than $20.00 to $30.00
The 60 minute cassette tapes are the more durable ones, and can be had for about $1.00 each.
Much information is available on the Internet about how to record your voice on tape.
For converting your tapes to MP3, my choice is a freeware named Audacity.
The benefit of this software is that not only it has professional features, but it has excellent on-line manuals and step-by-step instructions.
After that, it is only a question of trial-and-error until you are happy with the final outcome.
It is time and effort well invested.

There is a manual for this model available in pdf format unless you have the original instruction book. Page 23 outlines 'command mode' where you can try pressing ENTER and the corresponding number buttons simultaneously on the remote for more than 3 seconds while pointing RC at the recorder. In your case, because your recorder is set to command mode 1 - press ENTER and 1 together on the remote. This should allow you back into the on-screen menu to revert the command mode back to 3 (which is the default) and it should work.

Old question, but in case anyone else has the same problem, it is because you are not in an area that is well lit enough. Light has to enter into the right number of holes so the photocell 'knows' which page you are on. Make sure to review all the pages from the start as well because if the right page is not recognized, you can end up with your voice not matching the text.

Ahhhhh! I'm having the same problem! I never would have purchased this, had I know there was no place to record the dedication!

Check your leader tape. BTW: Recording a title page makes for a better keep-sake. ie: Jane and Fred's Wedding August 10, 2009 writtrn in a heart. Tape 1, Tape 2...

The recorded file comes up as a text document on my computer instead of a recording?  Do I need to download some sort of program on my computer?
