Sounds like you did the install correctly, to verify this you need to see if the driver for your Officejet 6110 is avail under printers and faxes. Click on 'Start' then on "Printers and Faxes', you should see a driver for this new printer. To set it as the default right click on it and then choose 'set as default printer'.
Typically the icon for the printers that you see on the desktop are for the toolbox, you may need to download a seperate installer for this feature. If you are just looking for a shortcut to this printer you can add one to your desktop by right clicking on the printer and then choose 'create shortcut'
