Bypass doser malfunctions

When I grind my espresso, the machine works fine. When I use the bypass doser (pre ground coffee), however, the machine starts its cycle but ends by spewing the unused, dry grounds into the bin and no water/coffee in my cup. What gives?

  • DIYdude Apr 20, 2008

I have the same problem ...along with some others ...but what I can't understand is why it stops when no coffee is actually loaded in the bypass doser. I usually do this before brewing the first shot to preheat and after the last shot to clean the machine. Why does it now seem to cut out ...or sometimes only work if I hold the brewing button down during the cycle? It seems to have other intermittent brewing problems as well ...is my Saeco Magic Deluxe haunted?

Happens when the preground coffee is not ground fine enough, you may have to put the pre ground coffee in a manual coffee grinder to make it finer. The machine is not really designed to brew regular coffee grounds.

Why my saeco royal not grinding?

hi,
pls try to describe what are the symptoms.
Grinder might be dead, or the doser switch may say that there's no need for grinding because it feels there is enough ground coffee.
I would clean the grinder completely, clean the doser from all ground coffee and give it a try and let me know.
Hope that helps.

Rancilio Rocky w/ doser: clean sweep of coffee grounds

The Rancilio Rocky coffee grinder is a superb, highly recommended machine, but its doser is pretty useless in the home. First reason: you want to grind coffee instants before you brew or pull your espresso shot; otherwise, the grinds just lose aromatics and flavor. The doser only works for multiple doses, so you're better off just grinding the amount you need each time. If you're buying a Rocky, get the doserless model.

If you have the doser model, like I do, you also find that the vanes which sweep the coffee into your portafilter or cone leave a layer of grounds on the doser floor. If not cleaned out, they turn rancid. There are coffee web sites with fairly complicated instructions on how to modify the vanes to do a clean sweep. Here's the simple way:

Flip up the doser cover, and spin the vanes while pressing your finger lightly on the outer top edge of one vane. The vanes have enough play so the pressure brings one into light contact with the doser floor, sweeping 99% of the grounds into your waiting portafilter.

Door from grinder will not let coffee into brew unit

From the description I understand that the flap at the outlet from grinder is not easy to open and let coffee grounds out from the grind chamber.
Firstly this is a mechanical obstruction and not related to any electrical or electronic control.
This happens frequently in the Ceramic burr grinders due to the following reasons:
1- The beans used are dark roast oily. Such beans are not good for use i any fully automatic model. This should be stopped immediately.
2- The grind fineness may be set at fine powdery level. This is done because there is wrong assumption thata fine grind makes stronger espresso. That is not applicable in fully automatic machines. The extraction of espresso in fully automatic machine is with pre infusion (also called pre brew soaking) and uses a back pressure valve for 9 bar extraction pressure. For this reason
the coffee grounds should not be finer than table salt grain. If coffee fineness is set at powdery fine, then the setting should be changed to coarser setting.
3- Grinder may not have been cleaned for an extended period. If so clean the grinder. Use brush or scrape solid deposits in corners and crevices to clean.
Finally as a part of cleaning, use a rag wrapped on finger or screw driver to wipe the invisible oil deposits on the grinder parts between the burr and the outlet.
Check the flap in the coffee outlet is hinged correctly and moves freely front and back to make sure that it is not blocking outlet for ground coffee.

HOW DO I CHANGE THE GRINDING MECHANISM ON MY SPIDEM TREVI EXCLUSSIVE ESPRESSO MACHINE. I HEAR THE MACHINE GRINDING BUT IT'S REALLY NOT DOING ANYTHING. ANY SUGGESTIONS

When the grinder spins free and fast it only means that fresh beans are not feeding into the burrs. This happens when:
1- Grind setting is too fine and beans cannot enter the grinder mechanism.
2- Use of oily dark roast beans can clog the ground coffee chamber and preven the fresh beans entering the grinder.
3- The ground coffee chamber outlet is clogged due to oily beans or too fine coffee setting.

When you cleaned the grinder you may not have cleaned the coffee outlet to the doser on the left. You can clean the outlet to open the passage of coffee grounds to collect in the dosing device..
After cleaning the outlet, you should next make sure that coffee grounds are not packed in the doser. The doser is inside the door right above the brew group.
To access the doser:
1- Remove water tank.
2- Remove the brew group.
3- Lay the machine on its back for full view of the doser.
4- Pull the doser door open (it is like an Attic door.
5- Keep the doser door open and clean the inside with a brush. The outlet from the grinder is on the right side with a wire wiper cleaner that moves across the grinder outlet fills from the grinder. This opening.
Use a brush to clean the doser.
On the left of the doser space there is a plastic flap that is pushed to the left when coffee grounds fill the doser.
At certain distance push back (1/4") the notch on top of the flap pushes the doser micro switch pin to stop the grinder. Push the flap gently to the left to make sure that it is moving well. With each push back of the flap, one can hear the feeble click sound from the micro switch.
When the above cleaning is done, try the grinding.
If the conical burrs have not been replaced for over 2500 grinds, it is time to do so.

The above grinder and grinder doser cleaning instructions are available as download files on the following page link:

One can find many useful maintenance guides on one page.
Good luck.

Our Saeco Vienna Superautomatica sounds like it's grinding beans but keeps running until the red 'bean' light comes on and we have to shut the machine off. Any suggestions?

The grinder is timing out and stops if the beans do not enter the grinder. This happens because:
1- The grinder outlet is clogged and fresh beans cannot pass through the burrs.
2- The grind setting is too fine and helping clogging in the grinding chamber or the ground coffee outlet.
3- Operator may have been using dark roast oily beans. Like it or not, the dark roast oily beans do not make stronger espresso. Please stop using such beans in fully automatic espresso machines.
4- The grinder has already made over 2000 grinds and the burrs are blunted and not grinding beans as needed.
To solve this malfunction, clean the grinder. Make sure the grinder outlet to the doser is cleaned. This outlet passage is about 2 inches or more. To clean it, lay the machine on its back (water tank side) to allow better view of cleaning the doser and the passage of coffee from the grinder to the doser. Use the link below to find instructions for cleaning the grinder and replace the burrs.

Hi, sounds like your pushing the wrong button or doing the process in the wrong order. If your putting coffee in and only getting water, then that tells me that is is dumping the coffee before it gets brewed. dazza

Using the pre-ground coffee option, no coffee

The grind might be too fine or too much coffee is being added to the chamber. Try it without coffee if it works, the try with a coarser grind.

Saeco digital plus not grinding

Sounds like your grinder is clogged and do you hear a clack, clack? That would be the solenoid opening the doser box.
