You have a short circuit in your camera...it can produce a flame. Be careful.

The flash circuit is defective. As it's only a couple weeks old, recommend just exchanging it for another from your place of purchase. You shouldn't be attempting repair while its under warranty.

try taking the batteries and memory card out let it set and put everything back in it ang cut it on

You are correct in saying that the bulb needs to be replaced. Take the camera to any camera shop and they will replace it for you.

The orange light blinking means the flash is charging, once the light goes off you can go ahead take picture with flash. Your light keeps blinking because the flash is not ready.
Try with fully charged batteries. If it won’t work, you may have an open fuse or something wrong with the flash circuit.

when i take a picture the flash goes off but my actual picture is dark and grainy. i have new, powerful batteries. The camera is on auto. I had this problem before, sent it off to have it repaired 1 year ago, and now have it again.

Just to make sure it's the same problem, here's a description: The flash seems to be out of sync with the shutter. Using the flash in medium or low light (in auto mode) makes the picture darker than not using a flash at all. It ruins the picture. In a completely dark room, even though the flash fires, the pictures comes out pitch black.

The problem is the flash unit -- it needs to be replaced. If your camera is under warranty, Canon will replace it for free. (You pay only to ship it to them.)

(You might try what they told me to try before I shipped it off, and that was to reset the camera by pushing and holding the menu button until it resets. Didn't do anything for mine, but who knows.)

If it's not under warranty, Canon will offer to replace it with a refurbished newer model for a discounted price. That's my situation now, because the problem has come back.

I did come across a posting that described how to replace the flash unit yourself -- it involves taking the camera apart, but looks doable. (Sorry, I don't have the link handy and I'm not sure if I can find it back.) The problem is, I don't know where to get the part. Canon has been no help on this. Anyone know where I can get a Canon flash unit for the A85?

This happened to my SD1000 and I followed the step by step instructions shown here:

and when I got to step 15, I found that the small plug that connects the flash to the camera body had been disconnected when the camera had been dropped. I simply pressed the connection back in tight and reassembled the camera - and it works. Maybe this happened to yours too??

Please don't take offense, but the following should logically be tried first. Notice that the location of the flash is very close to where most people would hold the camera. Try taking some photos, but pay attention to where you would naturally place your fingers. Was it near or over the flash? If so conciously try to keep them away from the flash and then compare your pictures. Has the problem been corrected?

Got it. I had the same issue with my SD950. If you may have dropped it, this happens quite a bit. Good thing is that the green light goes one still.

Go into the settings mode and reset the camera to its default configuration. This usually works. If you cannot even get to this, the LCD may be damaged beyond a simple reset/software fix and it might need to be repaired.
