Try updating Windows first.
Next update your drivers for the device from the company website.
Restart your computer without the device plugged in.
After all is loaded, try plugging it in again and see if Windows will pick it up.

Hopefully this will help.

I need to locate a mother board for a firelite model #USBFLB40-C any suggestion? Or where can I get a new USB power data plug soldered on the old board? Thank you.

Yes I would take the Harddrive out of the SmartDisk FireLite external harddrive, and install it into an economical external enclosure.

Looking up reviews just now I know that it's a laptop sized harddrive that's inside.
(The Harddrive inside is 2.5 inches across in width. 2-1/2 inches)

I don't know however if it is an IDE or SATA unit.
But you will know once you get the case open, and view the Harddrive inside.

One example of a 2.5 IDE external enclosure,

One example of a 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

One example of an external enclosure that will support IDE or SATA harddrives that are 2.5,

I have a SmartDisk FireLite Model Number USBFLB40-C. I took it to some local data recovery specialists, but I think they said the motor was out. They said I'd have to send it into the company. However,...

After a quick check, it seems as if SmartDisk have disappeared off the face of the earth (or at least the internet). Strange. I did find the following phone number (which you may have also found in your search), it might be worth trying that if you haven't already (note I have not checked it myself, so no idea if it still works):
01252 530960
Note also this is a UK number (I can't find a US one). To be quite honest, I doubt this will work.
If that doesn't work, then I'm afraid there's not a lot you can do yourself if its the motor that has broken. The next move would be to take it back to the recovery specialists, explain your situation, and see if they can recommend anyone who might be able to replace the motor (if they won't do it themselves).
By the way, thanks for clearly wording your question, it makes life a lot easier when people do that.

My external firelite model #USBFLB40, stop work today, i tried in other laptoop, and its work but after i disconnect, i want to used it again, and dosent work, ether my lap, nether the other lap... ...

1. It may be due to the electronics in the USB case.
You can purchase a new case and install the hard drive and connect to the USB port to your laptop/PC.
If the drive is not seen after this then the drive itself may be damaged.
If you disconnected the USB drive without "safely removing it in Windows it may have damaged the hard drive controller.

I have a firelite model USBFLB40-C it was working fine yesterday but today I can't access it. The light blinks but my computer nor two other computers recogize it. I have about 15 GB of information I need...

Hi Terry,

We can definitely help you with this issue. If the drive has been tested on more than one computer you have already finished the first diagnostic for us. The next step is to remove the harddrive from the enclosure and install it in a new enclosure as this is the next most likely solution.

If you do not have the skill/tools to safely perform the operation pop into your local PC shop and ask one of the technicians to move the old 40GB drive into a new enclosure for you to test if the drive is working. If it is working in the new enclosure buy it and be on your way. I would also suggest buying a new external as 40GB drive must be at least 3-4 years old and mean time to failure averages 5 years.

If they test the drive and it doesn't work in the new enclosure, reply back with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to an appropriate pro who can recover the data for you.

Either way let me know how you make out,

Chris

My Windows 98Se OS does not recognize the USBFLB40-C Lot No JH570s

If the Windows 98SE driver installation steps do not proceed smoothly, try the following steps to remove, then re-install the drivers:
  1. With the FireLite connected to the USB port, open My Computer, then Control Panel, then System. Click on the Device Manager tab and make sure the View devices by type option is selected.
  2. Expand the listing (click on the “+”) for Universal Serial Bus Controllers near the bottom of the list.
  3. If you see an entry with an alert icon (yellow exclamation symbol or question mark), right click on the entry and choose Remove.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3, expanding (if present) the listing for Other Devices.
  5. Exit all the windows opened in step 1.
  6. Disconnect the FireLite from the PC’s USB port.
  7. Reboot your computer.
  8. Again try the driver installation steps that came with the driver you downloaded.

Smartdisk Firelite model USBFLB40-c - not recognising - stored data recovery

Most likely the vacuum and not the ants. The vacuum could have given it a dangerous charge or vibration. You may need to extract the drive from the enclosure. It possible ( hopefully) that the enclosures bridge board failed instead of the drive. When you extract the drive, you will see....its construction is made well, and can stand up to crittters..

keep me posted.
