Sony STR-DG500 Receiver Logo
Posted on Dec 06, 2009

I recently purchased a new Samsung Blue Ray player. My previous Sony DVD player used the blue, green, red cords plugged into DVD imput, and I used Coaxial for sound. The Blue Ray only uses HDMI, which the receiver does not have, or Optical. When I plug Optical in, I can only get sound on Video 1 and not on DVD where the picture is shown. In a nutshell, it is either awesome sound no picture or great picture and no sound.. Suggestions???

If you have the receiver on the dvd input, you cannot use a optical audio input for sound. If you want sound on the dvd input you need to hookup a coaxial line for the digital audio. That or hookup the dvd player to the video 1 input on the receiver. This model has 3 digital audio inputs, Video 1-(optical), Video 2-(optical), & DVD- (Coaxial)

Also, If you want surround sound through the receiver, simply hook the HDMI to the TV and turn on the BD's HDMI settings to audio mute so no audio is output through the hdmi, then hook up an optical or coaxial to the receiver.

Optical carries only 5.1 sound, no video. HDMI carries both video and sound. If your receiver doesn't have HDMI, check your TV for optical output. You can go BluRay to TV via HDMI, then TV to receiver via optical.

If you don't have optical out on your tv, you're going to need either a receiver with HDMI or a BluRay player with component output (blue, green, red).

Why wont my samsung dvd-vr357 play blu ray disks

Educated guess is you need a blu ray player. I have several very expensive Pioneer Elite DVD players and they cannot play blu ray. Blu ray is a multi level glorified DVD which you need at least a blu ray player to play in almost all cases.

You can play dvds on a blue ray but not the reverse in most cases. If you play a dvd on a blu ray player it kicks the video up to HD for the DVD.

Connecting my new samsung blu-ray player (bd-fm57c) to my toshiba theaterview tv.

I don't think that cord will work. HDMI carries video and audio signals, you might get video but probably no sound. You might as well try anyway though so here goes... The red green and blue plugs are your video and the other red plug and the white plug is for stereo sound. The yellow plug is just a lower quality video plug. So plug in the red blue and green plugs into the component video inputs on the TV then the red and white plugs into the audio inputs. DON'T plug in the yellow plug. If this doesn't work go to your local home theater store and ask for a receiver or switcher that will downscale high def HDMI to component video and stereo audio. You can probably pick up a cheap one for around $100. Good luck!

Blue ray will not play dvd but will play blue ray samsung db p1500

Blue ray uses a blue laser spectrum and DVD uses the red spectrum. The blueray player must have dual capability to play both red and blue spectrum discs. If it has been and is broken, contact the manufacturer for the 1 year warranty. If it has never played DVD then most likely its not compatible.

My Sony DVD player is only showing colors in green and purple hues. Could it be a connection problem?

Yes. Could be the color signal jacks in the back. Make sure you have them plugged in properly, green for green, blue for blue, and red for red.

We're not getting any sound from the dvd's. I have two cables (green/blue/red) and (red/white). but I'm at a loss how to connect from DVD to TV. Help please!

If your TV has the green, blue, red inputs then connect these 3 cables for the picture. DVD to TV, green to green, blue to blue and red to red. If your TV only has a yellow input, then connect the green cable only from the DVD yellow to the TV yellow. Now for the sound. Connect the DVD white to the TV white. Connect the DVD red to the TV red with the red cable. The white and red inputs will be next to the yellow and the green, blue, red inputs on the TV. Next select the TV input using your TV remote. Select the input for the DVD connection.

Hooked up dvd sr200p to bravia..no color...

If you are connected useing the component video cords (red, blue, green, red, white) it sounds as if you have the red, blue or green cords connected to the wrong color of jacks on the back of the TV or the DVD player, recheck your connections.
If all is good there, maybe one of those cords are bad?
The Sony DVP-SR200P DVD player is on the bottom end of their model line up, and you may have received a bad one right out of the box!
GOOD LUCK !!
