Optical carries only 5.1 sound, no video. HDMI carries both video and sound. If your receiver doesn't have HDMI, check your TV for optical output. You can go BluRay to TV via HDMI, then TV to receiver via optical.
If you don't have optical out on your tv, you're going to need either a receiver with HDMI or a BluRay player with component output (blue, green, red).

If you have the receiver on the dvd input, you cannot use a optical audio input for sound. If you want sound on the dvd input you need to hookup a coaxial line for the digital audio. That or hookup the dvd player to the video 1 input on the receiver. This model has 3 digital audio inputs, Video 1-(optical), Video 2-(optical), & DVD- (Coaxial)
Also, If you want surround sound through the receiver, simply hook the HDMI to the TV and turn on the BD's HDMI settings to audio mute so no audio is output through the hdmi, then hook up an optical or coaxial to the receiver.
