Try a hard reset first: Unplug the printer from power source and PC, wait about 5 minutes and replug. Should the issue recur, then the cover sensor is probably faulty. That is the reason you are getting this error repeatedly. The only solution is to send the printer in for servicing and get the sensor repaired/replaced.
In any case, here are the steps to close the inner cover:
1. Press the Open Button (1) to open the Paper Output Tray (2).
2. Raise the Scanning Unit until it stops.
3. Close the Inner Cover
4. Now close the Scanning Unit.
You can also try reinstalling the printer software along with any patches, updates, etc from the
Canon website. Make sure you uninstall the existing software first though..
