Flash won't pop up

I have a Nikon D40. I had a problem with the flash which suddenly didn't work. Using an online repair, I fixed the flash successfully. But now the flash will not pop up. I will soon disable the flash again and just use my external flash unless someone can help me with the pop up factor. The catch does not release.

Thanks. The battery is charged. It stopped popping up after I repaired the flash that wouldn't flash. Now it flashes but in the closed position. I was hoping there was a simple fix for the inoperable catch so I didn't have to spend big bucks.

Hello

Thank you for using FixYa for your problem

Always check the batteries first but if is it still giving the same fault, your camera is faulty.
It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate. Very few digital cameras have any user-serviceable parts.

Please rate our solutions and if you still have problems please call back for more ideas to help you

For future reference to others with this same problem of the flash not popping up... I also followed the video (http://www.vimeo.com/3141400) to remove the cover from the flash & noticed on the L (or V) piece that he shows, hooks around the screw- look just BELOW that & you will see 2 small "U" shaped brackets. My two u shaped brackets just below the L were not level with each other, one metal bracket was pinned down under the L shaped bracket. As soon as I pulled it out & made the two brackets level with each other, viola!! The flash pops up & fires- no more smoke smell & saved myself $94-200 that Nikon quoted me to have it looked at & fixed. Hope this helps, wish I could post pictures on here of what I'm talking about :) (comment to me here & I'll e-mail them to you)

The D40 is a low end camera, but before you discard it, I would contact the closest Nikon repair depot (see the Nikon website for the location) and ask them for a repair estimate. You will then be able to decide if it is better to have it repaired or replace it with a newer model.

It sounds like you may have an intermittent electronics problem. Intermittent electronic failures can be very hard to troubleshoot. I recommend that you call Nikon and ask for a repair quote. There number is 1-800-NIKON-US (1-800-645-6687). The are open 9AM-8PM EST, Monday to Friday.

Auto flash wont work

did it pop up automatically or did you pop it manually? if it popped up by itself then the flash unfortunately is probably dead, since on automatic, it won't pop unless it's going to fire. If you popped it manually then - the camera doesn't think that the flash is necessary for the conditions that you're shooting in.

D70 internal flash not firing

Check if something is preventing the flash to pop up 'fully'. Check for some dust or other particles trapped between the flash and the body. Does the screen say 'Subject is too dark'? If so, the flash has not popped up fully.

Nikon D40 will not flash

The lightning bolt icon in viewfinder blinks when flash is not ready, this can happen if flash doesnt pop up all the way, or if flash strobe tube is bad.

Nikon d40 flash won't fire

If lightning bolt icon is blinking in viewfinder, flash is not ready. Either flash isnt popped up all the way or flash strobe tube is bad.

My flash is too bright...

Flash also has several modes you can toggle through by pressing and holding the button that pops up the flash while using the command dial to change modes... rear curtain, slow sync, red eye reduction, etc. These show up on the top LCD under the lightning bolt icon.
