HTC Hero will not turn on. Phone shut itself off

look for updates for your OS, its possible that there has been an update for his OS, also make sure that you run STOCK OS on your phone AT ALL TIMES. other OSes will simply cause your phone not to work at its full capacity or use the wrong settings on your phone's features, including wifi.

DUD take it back. or have your service provider reinstall Android. make sure it is the same version or better. You could try to reset the phone to factory but this erases all data on your phone.

your service provider should have done that for you. the phone itself does not have voicemail

You are very vague with your problems, but I would suggest going to a Sprint store to have them help you setup your new phone. They can step you through starting up, getting your accounts configured, etc.

To turn the phone off, you need to first get past the screen lock and get to the phone. Then you need to hold down the red end call button. Hold it down long enough to get a popup menu. The top option is "Power off". Select this and it will ask for a confirmation to shut off the phone.
