Just wondering if anyone can help me with this drive. I bought it 2 months ago and the other day it dropped on its side about half a foot and the usb connector inside the case just fell off and is now floating inside the hard case. Now i realise its just a normal 3.5inch HDD inside so i just want to open the case and use a SATA - USB adapter so i can still make use of it. Is there are special way of opening it? Ive taken the base off to reveal the only 2 screws which look like a phillips head but none will fit it. i can pry the side open a little but then im afraid it will just crack and bits of plastic will go flying.
Has anyone done it before or have any ideas?

I believe Seagate has a 5yr warranty with this drive. Why not have Seagate honor the warranty and have them repair or replace the drive?

I was able to open my FreeAgent 500 GB
My problem is that the USB port has broken away from the board.
I was thinking of soldering them back, however the soldering appears to be very fine.
The port has 3 pins on it. (is this right), if I look closely, there seems to be slot of 5 pins.
Could it be possible at 2 pins have broken and fallen inside the drive/casing?
The drive is a SATA
What kind of drive is in this case? Is it a SATA? Thx.
1. Remove the rubber feet
2. remove the screws from where the rubber feet were.
3. Remove the esata/usb base
4. remove the lower plastic cover
5. remove the tiny screws
6. remove the metal shield
7. remove the 3 base screws.

stick a standard screw driver into the lower holes and twist. One side
panel will move, one will not. The removeable panel is the one with the
logo that lights up. If you are looking at the drive from the back
where the ports are, the panel is on the left.
9. Stick the
screwdriver between the plastic of the panel that moves. this panel has
4 clips holding it on very tightly but it can be pryed off.

Once the panel is open, unplug the drive and remove it. It is in a
metal free floating cage. Remove the rubber covers to reveal the screws.

Pry the two cage panels apart and the drive is free. There is no
permanent damage to the case, so you should be able to mount another
drive in it.
If your afraid of spliting the case I would go fishing persay. I would try to fish the usb out to the hole. I know that you cant get it thru the hole so, if you get a magnet or a pair of tweezers or what ever you can, to snap it back into place. I dont think its broken. that will give you some time to find the right tool for the screws. once you get the tool youll need a small pocket knife to pop the case apart. once your in the case youll want to modify it so the usb cant drop back in again I would wire it and hot glue it from inside

yeah but as far as i know i think the metal usb part itself has snapped off as its just floating,,, do u think it might be still attached??
i think whats happened is, it literally just the metal usb housing that is soldered onto the adapater motherboard has come off, as i can see inside the hole and it all looks normal accept for the silver usb housing is missing so i cant plug it in,,, i dont think its still connected to anything by the look of it.... mmm maybe ill have to just try and open it,,, this screws are weird as they not torx screws,, but none of my jewlers screwdrivers will undo them,,,, do u have one of these drives?
basically the screws were mounted at the bottom underneath the plastic on the foot of the case. i got them off then had to pry the case open, due to strong plastic clips. When i was inside i discovered that the usb mouting solder had just come off. So instead of trying to solder it back on the board, i just ordered a caddy online, for £11 which fits the 3.5 inch drive straight in with an internal fan and all. Its actually better quality too as its a strong metal case. so problem solved, and ill never buy a seagate drive again. Very average quality. Thanks for your help anyway

i hate the seagate now for putting such a bad design of the USB just sticking out to the edge and the f**g thing came off when a strong air blew that away.. Now dont know how to get this going, I'm scared to solder it. I opened the box and took the hard disk away, but dont know how to connect this thing to the laptop and get it going.. Appreciate any help ..
