Hello I have a 52hm84 and sometimes the lamp will come on and sometimes it wont it is not the lamp as I have tried another one.... looking at sites it seems that it is the bales can I change that myself
Its the ballast. I don't know your skill level so I can't say wether you can or not. It may no longer be available. As of 3 month ago the light engines needed to be removed and sent to Toshiba to be rebuilt. The ballast is on the light engine assy behind the lamp.

You need to first look from the side(left) and or back to see if lamp comes on even for a few seconds.
Average life span for the model indicated (52hm84) is 2,000 hours or 2 years.
The lamp is the place to start and it is customer replaceable so if you remove it and find it damaged (shattered inside) you know what your problem is.
The fault is indicative of the lamp circuit, check the lamp fittings, check the power circuit and the ballast. If the voltage insufficiency is present from the power supply it can lead to low current and thus the lamp will not power up. Also if the replaced lamp is faulty, not of original quality or if there are connector issues, this must be rechecked. Check all the connectors on the power supply side and the motherboard. remove and reconnect.
Your power supply board is dead, u know basic electronics' and soldering? Most of the times, the power supply board just have dead leakages gases capacitors. These capacitors always bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top.Replaced these gases leakages capacitors will get your TV power stable, and work again.Or tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.
It is possible the lamps may be defective or that they may be the wrong replacement for this model, as it may have a different wattage setup with the ballast. If you want to try to order the TB25 lamp from a different vendor, you can order the original Toshiba replacement lamp for this model (52HM84) from a major Toshiba parts distributor at the link below:
